About the Job Venatôre is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to support a three-year government contract in either Springfield, VA or St. Louis, MO. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position performed onsite in the client’s Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF); telecommuting is not available. The Senior DevOps Engineer will improve the speed, reliability, security, and consistency of software delivery by strengthening DevOps practices, automation, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure management, and operational discipline. This role will bridge development and operations, enhance observability and incident response, improve configuration management and documentation, and support resilient, scalable enterprise systems in a classified environment.
Responsibilities
CI/CD, Build & Deployment
- Configure, maintain, and enhance CI/CD pipelines supporting multiple web applications.
- Perform application builds using source code, dependencies, and required build tooling.
- Implement automated testing, vulnerability scanning, and security validation as part of software delivery workflows.
- Deploy applications and services across development, staging, and operational environments.
- Support GitOps-based deployment and operations using ArgoCD or similar technologies.
- Develop and maintain Helm charts for deploying resources to OpenShift and Kubernetes environments.
- Improve deployment consistency, repeatability, reliability, and recoverability across environments.
Infrastructure, Cloud & Configuration Management
- Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code and configuration management solutions.
- Research, design, develop, and modify enterprise-wide cloud solutions and application environments.
- Support the creation, configuration, integration, and sustainment of systems and networks.
- Develop strategic system architecture plans for complex enterprise environments.
- Incorporate emerging technologies and product supportability considerations into solution design and implementation.
- Manage web application infrastructure, including TCP/IP, DNS, certificates, load balancing, and related services.
Software & Systems Engineering
- Design, develop, code, test, and debug highly complex software products and significant enhancements to existing systems.
- Apply advanced engineering methods, theories, and research techniques to solve complex software and systems challenges.
- Resolve complex hardware/software compatibility, integration, and interface design issues.
- Conduct technical investigations, evaluations, and testing of considerable complexity.
- Contribute code enhancements, configuration changes, and technical updates to existing repositories.
- Develop system and application architecture diagrams for new and existing solutions.
- Advise hardware engineering personnel on system characteristics that affect software performance, including storage capacity, processing speed, and input/output requirements.
Security, Monitoring & Operational Support
- Manage and document system security configurations and controls in classified environments.
- Perform software and system updates in response to vulnerability scans, security findings, and compliance requirements.
- Integrate security components with applications, infrastructure, and databases.
- Support zero-trust identity and access management implementations using technologies such as OIDC and OAuth 2.0.
- Implement and maintain container monitoring, logging, networking, and security capabilities.
- Enhance observability, monitoring, incident detection, troubleshooting, response, and recovery processes.
- Maintain secure web server configurations, certificate management, and operational compliance.
Documentation & Technical Communication
- Develop and maintain system architecture, configuration, security, and operational documentation.
- Provide technical input for user manuals, system documentation, training materials, and related technical publications.
- Prepare reports summarizing technical analyses, findings, recommendations, and project progress.
- Present technical results and recommendations to management, government customers, and other stakeholders.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of enterprise solution principles, information processing fundamentals, and industry best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of six years of directly related professional experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field; two additional years of information technology experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing complex systems, including experience in classified environments.
- Proficiency with Linux operating systems.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, Jenkins, CircleCI, or similar technologies.
- Knowledge of OpenID Connect (OIDC), OAuth, OAuth 2.0, or comparable zero-trust identity implementations.
- Experience with ArgoCD and GitOps-based operations management.
- Experience with web server and infrastructure management, including DNS and certificate management.
- Knowledge of HTTP API design standards and best practices.
- Ability to manage web application networking, including TCP/IP, DNS, and load balancing.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes and OpenShift.
- Working knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Experience with one or more Infrastructure as Code or configuration management technologies, such as Terraform, OpenShift Container Platform, AWS CloudFormation, AWS CDK, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.
- Knowledge of monitoring, logging, networking, and security for containerized environments.
- Experience deploying, configuring, and managing databases.
- Experience interacting with databases using SQL and object-relational mapping frameworks.
- Ability to write Python and Bash scripts for automation, systems administration, and engineering tooling.
- Ability to contribute code updates and enhancements to existing repositories.
- Experience with software and systems design, including the ability to create application architecture diagrams.
- Experience integrating security components with applications and databases.
- Experience with system and network creation, development, and integration.
- Solid understanding of information processing fundamentals and best practices.
- At least one relevant technical certification, such as CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, CISSP, or equivalent.
- Ability to perform all duties onsite in a client SCIF in Springfield, VA or St. Louis, MO.
- Ability to work a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week.
Preferred Qualifications
- Eight or more years of experience designing and implementing complex systems in a classified environment.
- Experience developing strategic system architecture plans.
- Familiarity with configuration management and Request for Change processes, including technical review and impact assessment.
- Experience implementing zero-downtime re-indexing strategies and managing complex Elasticsearch data models, including routing, query-time processing, and de-duplication within OpenShift or Kubernetes environments.
- Experience with observability technologies such as Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana Alloy, Loki, Mimir, Tempo, or Grafana.
- Understanding of reverse proxy technologies such as Nginx, Traefik, Apache HTTP Server/WebGate, HAProxy, or Envoy.
- Experience delivering integrated solutions using Agile software development and delivery methodologies.
- Experience in systems engineering and project or program management.
- Knowledge of or experience with National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency enterprise products, including NGA CORE.
