About us

Edison Scientific builds and deploys AI scientist agents to accelerate science and the development of new medicines. We are an ambitious team run by scientists and engineers from leading institutions across biology, physics, chemistry, and AI.

The Role

As an Engineering Manager, you'll play a key role in leading and scaling the people and technology powering our autonomous scientific discovery platform.

Your primary focus will be in leading our cloud team. Our largest enterprise clients have compliance and security limitations which limit first-party data access to systems running within their own cloud infrastructure. These datasets are uniquely valuable assets, when combined with our scientific platform, Edison’s enterprise partners are able to power novel drug or materials discovery campaigns at massive scale. The cloud team’s mandate is to conquer the gnarly complexity that comes with these “bring your own cloud” engagements such that our platform is deployable within client cloud infrastructure.

Our mission is to build an AI scientist, and you'll lead the team which enables Edison to scale to the largest research organizations in the world. This role will influence architecture, operations, and growth of our cloud deployment product. You will help mentor junior engineers and enable senior engineers to build world class software.

This role is on-site at our San Francisco office in the Dogpatch neighborhood. Our office is a converted warehouse with high ceilings, open space, and a team that genuinely believes in what they're building.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop the existing 5 person cloud team owning the mentorship, career development, and hiring for this critical organizational function.
  • Own client interactions surrounding deployments and onboarding with our growing portfolio of enterprise clients.
  • Partner with our forward deployed engineering team to set delivery timelines and align on requirements for inflight engagements.
  • Lead the team to develop a world class strategy around secure bring your own cloud (BYOC) deployments.
  • Diagnose and solve bottlenecks in our BYOC process to streamline operations.
  • Develop a technical and people strategy for scaling up our engagement capacity.
  • Own technical decision making surrounding our BYOC product.
  • Manage cross-functional communication and planning between engineering teams and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience managing an engineering team and leading cross-functional initiatives.
  • Prior experience working with clients in an enterprise setting.
  • Proficiency in at least one systems or backend language for operator development and infrastructure tooling.
  • Deep familiarity with cloud products (AWS/GCP), security, and deployment operations.
  • Strong understanding of application network architecture including VPCs, DNS, secrets, proxies, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Pulumi, or Crossplane) and GitOps workflows.

Bonus points for

  • Experience with AI applications or scientific computing solutions.
  • Prior experience in startups or small teams with significant architectural ownership and ambiguity.
  • Experience scaling systems, teams, or platforms through periods of rapid growth.
