Business Unit Overview

The Institutional Life (IL) business provides sophisticated life insurance solutions for the Bank-Owned Life Insurance (BOLI), Corporate-Owned Life Insurance (COLI), and Institutional COLI (ICOLI) markets. These solutions are designed to help organizations attract, retain, and reward highly compensated executives and professionals.

Role Overview: The AWS Data Engineer supports the development, maintenance, and analysis of cloud-based data solutions on AWS within the Institutional Life (IL) business at New York Life. Working within established technical standards and with moderate guidance from senior engineers or technical leads, this role develops and maintains data pipelines, performs data analysis, supports dashboards and reporting, and monitors data quality. The position applies knowledge of AWS data services, SQL, and Python to solve data engineering and analytical problems in the context of BOLI, COLI, and ICOLI product administration — while continuing to build higher-level technical capabilities.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and maintain ETL/ELT data pipelines using established designs, standards, and AWS services such as S3, Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, Athena, Redshift, and Aurora PostgreSQL. Support data ingestion and transformation from approved sources — including Salesforce, REST APIs, and legacy mainframe feeds — and troubleshoot routine pipeline and data-processing issues.
  • Write and maintain SQL queries to analyze datasets and support defined business reporting and analytical requirements. Develop and maintain dashboards and reports using approved visualization tools such as AWS Quick.
  • Follow established data governance, security, privacy, validation, error-handling, and data-quality standards. Monitor AWS data workflows and services using established monitoring procedures; resolve routine issues and escalate complex problems.
  • Assist with data storage, pipeline performance, reliability, and cost-optimization efforts using established practices. Document technical configurations, data workflows, operating procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
  • Collaborate with engineers, analysts, and business partners to understand defined requirements and complete assigned solutions. Work with moderate guidance, seeking direction for new, ambiguous, architectural, or complex assignments.

What You’ll Bring: Working knowledge of AWS data services, ETL/ELT concepts, SQL, Python, and relational or non-relational data sources. Familiarity with financial-services or insurance data — policy administration, premium payments, or reconciliation workflows — is a plus. You can analyze technical problems using established practices and communicate clearly with engineers, actuaries, and business partners in a regulated-industry environment.

Required Skills:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in data engineering, data analytics, cloud data technologies, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of core AWS data services such as S3, Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, Athena, Redshift, Aurora PostgreSQL, and RDS, plus ETL/ELT concepts and data-processing practices appropriate to insurance and financial-services data.
  • Proficiency with SQL and working knowledge of Python for data processing or automation.
  • Experience with relational and/or non-relational data sources and the ability to create or maintain dashboards and reports using a visualization platform.
  • Understanding of basic cloud security, IAM, encryption, data quality, and governance concepts.
  • Ability to analyze straightforward technical problems using established practices and communicate technical information clearly.

Preferred Skills:

  • Exposure to Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code tool for managing AWS resources.
  • Exposure to AWS Step Functions for workflow orchestration, Apache Spark, EMR, or CI/CD practices.
  • AWS certification or equivalent cloud training.
  • Familiarity with AWS generative-AI services, including Amazon Bedrock and Bedrock AgentCore, for agentic or analytics use cases
