Full description
The Database Administrator will support the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. This role provides expertise in database management, data warehousing, and decision support systems, with responsibility for the development, implementation, and maintenance of data warehouses and data marts. The candidate will assist with database design, performance tuning, security, and disaster recovery procedures while ensuring data integrity across integrated systems. This position also supports reporting and analytical tool implementation and works closely with technical and non-technical teams to meet agency data needs.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain production databases, including entering codes and monitoring performance metrics such as record distribution and available memory.
- Direct and coordinate with programmers and analysts to implement changes to the database management system.
- Review and correct programs, and respond to user questions regarding database functionality.
- Confer with coworkers to determine the impact of database changes on other systems and estimate associated staff costs.
- Perform data modeling and prototyping, including logical and physical data modeling and creation of relational database models.
- Monitor database performance and recommend efficiency improvements, including performance tuning.
- Maintain the data dictionary to ensure uniformity of definitions and establish standards for its use.
- Assist with database security standards, disaster recovery procedures, and system security controls.
- Support the installation of database software and assist with analysis, design, and implementation of databases.
- Ensure database user interfaces and reporting outputs comply with EIR Accessibility standards and assist users with related issues.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 years of strong knowledge of database management systems, data warehouse management, and decision support tools.
- 5 years of experience in the development, implementation, and maintenance of data warehouses and data marts.
- 5 years of experience with business objects and building the data dictionary.
- 5 years of experience using database access tools for application delivery.
- 5 years of strong familiarity with analysis, planning, and management reporting functions.
- 5 years developing well-developed oral and written communication skills.
- 5 years of strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- 5 years of experience applying an extremely high level of analytical ability to unusual and difficult problems.
- 5 years of understanding of benchmarking processes and techniques.
- 5 years of experience using strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees, and elicit work output.
- 5 years of experience with data warehousing data population and data modeling techniques for target structures such as Star Schemas, Snowflake Schemas, and highly normalized data models.
- 5 years of experience with GUI based ETL tools such as Informatica, IBM WebSphere DataStage, or similar tools.
- 5 years of implementation experience with enterprise class databases such as Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server, or similar technologies.
- 5 years of implementation experience with analytical and reporting tools such as Business Objects, Cognos, Hyperion, MicroStrategy, or similar tools.
- 5 years of experience with the data warehouse implementation process, from business requirements through logical modeling, physical database design, data sourcing and transformation, data loading, Structured Query Language (SQL), end-user tools, and database and SQL performance.
- 5 years of excellent analytical, problem-solving, team playing, and oral and written communication skills.
- 5 years of proven ability to work successfully with technical and non-technical groups and manage multiple responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years of Oracle Database experience.
- 5 years of PowerBI report creation experience.
Additional Requirements
- Candidates may be subject to criminal background checks as authorized by Texas law.
- Candidates must currently reside in Texas and be local to the Austin area, within a 50-mile radius.
Work Location and Schedule
- Location: 701 W 51st Street, Austin, Texas 78751.
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding Texas state holidays. May require work outside normal business hours on weekends, evenings, and holidays, as requested.
- Work Arrangement: Hybrid, on-site and telework.
