Java Software Engineer

Position

As a Backend Developer, you help build the backbone of Smappee’s energy management platform. You develop and own a part of our platform that connects our energy solutions with households, businesses, installers and partners to manage energy smarter. Whether you work closer to our devices or on the services and APIs powering our platform, your work has a direct impact on how Smappee measures, manages and optimises energy. As our platform evolves, so can your focus, giving you the opportunity to grow your expertise while helping shape the future of our technology.

Responsibilities:• Design, build and maintain Java backend services in our cloud platform and you own a domain within it rather than passing through it

• Work on the path from device to platform: data coming in, configuration going out and the model of an installation staying correct as it changes
• Develop the APIs that our UI and our partners consume
• Build and maintain the integrations the platform depends on, towards devices and towards the systems around us
• Act as third line support for your domain: you pick up escalated tickets, investigate incidents and turn the outcome into follow up work in the product
• Work directly with product management, firmware engineers, app and frontend developers and software testers, from the first design discussion rather than from a finished specification

• You have a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, or equivalent experience
• You have least five years of experience as a backend software engineer
• You are strong in Java and comfortable with relational databases and SQL (MySQL, Postgres)
• You have built event driven and message based integrations (Kafka, MQTT or comparable) and REST APIs that you both consume and expose
• You are at ease in a cloud environment (AWS) and working in a large modular codebase
• You can hold a full system in your head: hardware devices on one side, customers on the other and you reason clearly about what happens when one part of it goes offline
• You learn quickly and adapt. New domains, unfamiliar code and shifting priorities are part of the job and you help the people around you keep up as well
• You take ownership. An escalated issue in your domain stays yours until it is solved
