About the role

Build, automate, upgrade, and operate large-scale Cloud Foundry foundations across data centers, improving infrastructure-as-code pipelines and safely delivering complex platform changes. Lead technical initiatives, mentor engineers, uphold security standards, and gradually expand platform engineering ownership into Kubernetes.

What they look for

Cloud Foundry BOSH Concourse Kubernetes Terraform Go Python Shell Scripting Linux Troubleshooting Infrastructure as Code Platform Engineering Automation Production Operations System Design Mentoring Security and Risk Controls

Requirements

Candidates need hands-on experience operating Cloud Foundry at scale, proficiency with BOSH and Concourse, working knowledge of Kubernetes, and experience with Terraform, programming, and Linux troubleshooting. They should be able to independently deliver reliable production platform designs and automation, mentor engineers, and communicate technical tradeoffs clearly.

Full description

Build the platforms that thousands of developers rely on to ship software with speed and confidence. You’ll join a core engineering team that operates one of the world’s largest Cloud Foundry environments and automates everything we can. If you enjoy owning complex initiatives end-to-end, reducing toil through infrastructure as code, and keeping critical platforms secure and resilient, this role is for you. You’ll have the opportunity to grow your Kubernetes platform engineering scope over time while continuing to strengthen and modernize our current platform.

Job Summary: As a Senior Platform Engineer (Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes) in the GAP Core Engineering team within Runtime Compute, you will build, upgrade, and operate Cloud Foundry foundations at scale while automating operations through modern engineering practices. You will own technical initiatives from planning through delivery, partnering with teammates to execute safely in complex production environments. You will help reduce technical debt and improve upgrade and promotion reliability across our platform tooling. You will also take on an increasing share of Kubernetes platform engineering over time, helping translate proven Cloud Foundry operational practices to Kubernetes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain automation that deploys, upgrades, and operates Cloud Foundry foundations across multiple data centers
  • Own large technical initiatives end-to-end by defining the plan, establishing initial structure, and enabling team delivery
  • Modernize infrastructure as code and reduce technical debt in pipelines to make upgrades and promotions faster and less error-prone
  • Partner with infrastructure providers on platform-impacting changes (e.g., hardware refreshes and capacity migrations) and automate the platform side of the work
  • Plan and execute environment teardowns, rebuilds, and other high-risk changes with minimal disruption to application teams
  • Expand Kubernetes platform engineering ownership over time and help design how existing Cloud Foundry practices carry over to Kubernetes
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns through pairing, code review, and hands-on troubleshooting support
  • Contribute actively in retrospectives and design discussions by sharing what’s working and what needs improvement
  • Write secure, high-quality production code and provide thoughtful reviews for code written by others
  • Uphold the firm’s standards for security, risk, and controls across platform engineering work

Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

  • Hands-on expertise with Cloud Foundry, including installing, upgrading, and troubleshooting foundations at scale (open-source Cloud Foundry, VMware Tanzu Application Service, or both)
  • Proficiency with BOSH, including writing and debugging releases, manifests, and ops files
  • Proficiency with Concourse, including building and maintaining pipelines and operating Concourse
  • Working knowledge of Kubernetes, including running workloads or clusters and understanding core concepts
  • Experience using Terraform for infrastructure as code
  • Strong programming skills in at least one of Go, Python, or shell scripting
  • Strong Linux troubleshooting skills
  • Experience delivering system design, automation, testing, and operational stability for production platforms
  • Ability to take on design problems independently and carry them through with minimal oversight
  • Demonstrated track record of mentoring engineers and raising team capability
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical tradeoffs to audiences outside the team

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

  • Experience moving teams or workloads from Cloud Foundry to Kubernetes
  • Kubernetes certification (e.g., CKA or CKAD)
  • Experience with Kubernetes ecosystem tooling (e.g., Helm, operators, Cluster API, or GitOps tools such as Argo CD or Flux)
  • Experience with PKI and certificate rotation for platform control planes
