Full description

This position is hybrid and will require 3 days on site at one of the following Quest sites: Secaucus, NJ or Schaumburg, IL. Remote: This position can also be 100% remote if not located near a hub within certain criteria.

Pay Range: $110,000-145,000, plus yearly bonus.

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

As the Epic Cogito Database Administrator within the Infrastructure team, you are accountable for the architecture, performance, security, and day-to-day administration of Quest Diagnostics' Epic reporting database ecosystem. This critical infrastructure role focuses heavily on managing the backend data environments, primarily Epic Clarity and Caboodle, as well as the underlying infrastructure for SlicerDicer.

You will serve as the primary technical authority for Cogito infrastructure, ensuring a highly available, optimized, and secure data foundation. A key aspect of this role is maintaining a strong, collaborative partnership with the Cogito Application Team. The Epic Cogito & Reporting Systems Database Administrator is accountable for database health, successful ETL execution, schema management, and architectural capacity planning.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary infrastructure liaison to the Cogito Application Team, advising BIDs and the Cogito Sr. Manager on database capabilities, limitations, and performance optimization.
  • Lead architectural design and capacity planning exercises for the Epic Cogito stack, ensuring adequate system resources (RAM, CPU, storage) for current and future organizational analytics needs.
  • Mentor and cross-train infrastructure team members on Epic database operations.
  • Accountable for all installations, upgrades, patching, and database configurations for the Epic Cogito suite (Clarity, Caboodle) in coordination with the broader infrastructure team (UNIX, MS SQL, Windows, Network).
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and proactively address unusual system behavior to ensure optimal system performance and high availability.
  • Accountable for executing backups, restores, environment refreshes, and disaster recovery procedures for the Cogito databases.
  • Own, maintain, and support the nightly Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes (e.g., using Epic Console/Compass) into the reporting and data warehouse databases.
  • Lead the troubleshooting, research, and resolution of complex Clarity and Caboodle data extraction errors, minimizing downtime for the Application team.
  • Execute the addition of new tables, columns, and indexes to database tables as requested by the BI Developers to support organizational analytics.
  • Configure SlicerDicer-related infrastructure access and manage the database-level security and service accounts.
  • Define, create, and manage database user accounts, profiles, privileges, roles, and audit information ensuring compliance with Quest security standards.
  • Perform advanced hands-on tuning of T-SQL queries, indexing strategies, and relational database designs to optimize query performance for downstream BI tools.

Qualifications

Required Work Experience:

  • 5+ years acting as an Epic Cogito Database or ETL Administrator
  • Strong proficiency in Clarity, Caboodle, SlicerDicer
  • Strong background supporting BI/Data Warehouse teams in an enterprise healthcare environment

Preferred Work Experience:

  • Experience operating as a lead or senior technical resource in 3 or more large-scale Epic implementations.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Healthcare Administration, or equivalent professional work experience. (Required)
  • Master's degree in a technical or IT-related field. (Preferred)

Technical Training or Professional Licensing:

  • Active Epic Certifications in Clarity ETL Administrator and Caboodle Administrator (Required)
  • Microsoft SQL Server administration (Required)

Travel required: Less than 25%
