Senior Java Developer – Application Production Support & Automation

What does a great Senior Java Developer – Application Production Support & Automation do at Fiserv?

In this role, you will serve as a technical leader for the production support and operational health of a critical internal enterprise platform. You will lead daily validation routines, design and implement automated error detection and notification systems, and drive initiatives that expand the breadth and depth of our production monitoring. You will identify patterns in recurring failures and engineer lasting solutions, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure platform stability, data integrity, and operational excellence. You will participate in the analysis and estimation of work, develop and unit test code, and coordinate with front-end developers, Data Warehouse teams, and quality testers.

What you will do:

Production Support Leadership:

·         Lead and own daily production validation processes, ensuring all critical data pipelines, ETL streams, and application services operate within defined thresholds.

·         Serve as the primary technical responder for production incidents, conducting thorough root cause analysis and implementing permanent, engineered solutions.

·         Establish and enforce operational runbooks and escalation procedures for all production support activities.

·         Monitor application health metrics and proactively identify service degradation before it impacts users.

·         Coordinate with infrastructure, database, and architecture teams to resolve systemic production issues.

Automation & Error Detection:

·         Design and implement automated validation frameworks that significantly expand the scope and coverage of daily error checking beyond current manual processes.

·         Build automated alerting and notification systems that provide real-time visibility into application failures, data anomalies, and service degradation.

·         Develop tooling that reduces manual intervention in recurring operational tasks, improving team efficiency and incident response time.

·         Engineer self-healing mechanisms and automated remediation workflows for known and repeatable failure patterns.

·         Continuously evaluate and improve the quality and coverage of automated checks to stay ahead of emerging failure modes.

Recurring Failure Analysis & Resolution:

·         Analyze production logs, metrics, and incident history to identify recurring failure patterns and systemic root causes.

·         Develop and implement engineering solutions that address root causes rather than symptoms, reducing repeat incident rates.

·         Maintain a prioritized backlog of operational improvements and drive them to completion within Agile sprint cycles.

·         Document findings, solutions, and runbooks to build institutional knowledge and reduce team dependency on individual expertise.

Development & Technical Leadership:

·         Lead the design, development, and implementation of software applications to support business initiatives.

·         Create and optimize REST APIs using Java, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and Spring Security.

·         Manage application-specific infrastructure decisions and represent the application team in design strategy sessions with Database and Architecture teams.

·         Work closely with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications.

·         Perform coding, testing, and debugging of applications to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

·         Mentor developers and provide technical guidance to ensure best practices in both development and operational disciplines.

·         Refine specifications and requirements based on technical needs and stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends.

What you will need to have:

·         Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

·         5+ years working in Java, C, C#, and C++.

·         5+ years working with Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and Spring Security.

·         5+ years working in Microservices architecture.

·         5+ years designing RESTful APIs.

·         5+ years working in JPA and Hibernate.

·         3 years working in SQL databases with demonstrated experience optimizing queries embedded in Java code for optimal performance.

·         3 years working with data structures and database thread and session management.

·         3 years working with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

·         3 years executing industry-standard vulnerability scans and implementing corresponding remediation.

·         3 years identifying and mitigating OWASP vulnerabilities in a Java-based application.

·         3 years of branch and pipeline management.

·         3 years working with Agile methodologies including Scrum and Kanban.

·         3 years managing and prioritizing backlogs and breaking down requirements into hour or point estimates within the Agile framework.

·         Demonstrated experience leading production support operations for enterprise-grade applications.

·         Proven experience designing and implementing automated monitoring, alerting, or validation systems.

What would be great to have:

·         Experience in the Fintech industry.

·         Knowledge of portfolio management applications such as Clarity.

·         Experience with Python, Angular, and CSS for cross-functional coverage.

·         Cloud migration experience.

·         2 years working with message brokers including Kafka and IBM MQ.

·         Experience with observability platforms such as Splunk, Dynatrace, or Datadog.

·         Experience with Oracle databases and data warehouse environments.
