Jr. Systems Engineer

Overview: We are seeking a junior level systems engineer to work with our team in the design, integration, and development of our physical protection systems. These systems provide Access Control, Intrusion Detection, and Video Surveillance in industrial, nuclear power plant environments. These are on-prem systems (closed network. NOT cloud based, NO internet)

Familiarity with intrusion detection systems, access control systems, and video surveillance systems is desired. Writing/documentation skills, MSWord, Excel, and CAD software skills, and proficient with various computer hardware/software platforms are required.

Key Responsibilities:    System Architecture, Design & Integration

  • Work with the design of completely closed systems; traditional infrastructure, with no Internet, no wireless, no cloud computing. This will involve a redundant network design for servers, workstations, and field equipment. Designed for no single point of failure.
  • Confirm the systems meet requirements specific to the nuclear power plant industry (10 CFR 73) to ensure our systems meet regulatory compliance, high-reliability, and long-term operability.
  • Assist with Creating Network Designs; integrating hardware, software, communications, sensors, actuators, and HMIs into cohesive system solutions.
  • Assist with providing technical written and verbal direction to vendors, integrators, and internal development teams.
  • Author, maintain, and control System Documentation related to the system designed.

 Development & Implementation Support

  • Support system development activities including configuration definition, design reviews, and technical baseline control.
  • Participate in FAT, SAT, installation oversight, and system commissioning.
  • Assist to resolve technical issues identified during integration, testing, or operational use.
  • Support lifecycle activities including upgrades, modifications, and obsolescence management.
  • Ability to travel occasionally (out of state) to customer site for walkdowns, meetings, and brief installation oversight.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Systems, Electrical, Software, or related).
  • 3 to 5 years of experience designing and integrating systems.
  • Good basic understanding of electrical and electronics
  • Good basic understanding of software and computers (firmware knowledge a plus)
  • Good writing skills (for proposals, writing test procedures, user and administrator docs of system)
  • Understanding of schematics and wiring diagrams and ability to create them based on project needs (CAD experience a plus)
  • Ability to design and integrate components into a whole system (put together servers, workstations, io equipment, cameras, network switches, etc)
  • Good understanding of basic networking (subnets, principles of virtual networks, IP routing, and firewalls)
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good self-management (ability to know what needs to be done without direct supervision)
  • Occasional travel
  • Must pass a background check and drug screening

 Preferred / Bonus Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Linux (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Alpine/Devin) and Windows
  • Knowledge of Access control, Intrusion detection, and / or video surveillance is a plus
  • Ability to write some basic software/coding with writing software for an FPGA a bonus
  • Write firmware
  • Knowledge of networking and virtual networking
  • Former Navy nuclear, DOE, or DoD security engineering background with NRC crossover
