Full description
We're Looking for an experienced Lead Product Manager!
About the Company: Security Benefit is a leader in the U.S. retirement market with more than $75 billion in assets under management. We offer opportunities to thrive, innovate, and make an impact. As part of our team, you’ll play a key role in driving the future of the U.S. retirement industry. Security Benefit is a PLACE where we promise to help our customers To and Through Retirement®.
We’re proud to have been recognized as one of the best in the business:
- Named to Ward’s 50 list of top-performing life-health insurance companies
- Recognized on list of Ingram’s Top 100 Private Companies in the Kansas City area in 2025
About the Role: The Lead Product Manager, Finance & Reinsurance Systems is the senior-most contributor in the Product Management series supporting Security Benefit's Finance and Reinsurance domain. Unlike a Senior Product Manager, who owns the hands-on craft of product management for a single product area, this Lead Product Manager holds no product area or backlog of their own — they operate one level above execution, on the practice and portfolio across the Finance & Reinsurance domain.
Within the Finance & Reinsurance domain, the Lead PM shapes how product management is practiced across Finance systems, designs frameworks and approaches that Senior and Professional PMs execute, serves as the escalation point for what those PMs cannot resolve themselves, and carries formal people-development and hiring/promotion input for PMs in that domain.
Finance functional leaders (FP&A, Reporting, Treasury, Tax, Actuarial) and Reinsurance stakeholders are engaged as this role's core partnership network. The Lead PM leads through influence, credibility, and precise communication — translating fluently between Finance/Reinsurance domain language and Technology/Product delivery language.
The Lead Product Manager, Finance & Reinsurance Systems position reports to the Vice President, Portfolio Strategy & Delivery and can be based out of our office in Topeka or Overland Park, Kansas, or Des Moines, Iowa. We work a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility to work both remotely and on-site.
Key Responsibilities:
Domain Strategy & Roadmap
- Shape the 3-year product roadmap direction for the Finance & Reinsurance domain,
- Own the portfolio-level investment recommendation that Executive leadership acts on for prioritization, sequencing, and strategic trade-offs
- Serve as the product management perspective for Finance & Reinsurance in leadership discussions on digital strategy and CCDM model evolution
- Drive product thinking for complex, multi-year initiatives within the domain where no established playbook exists — including anticipating systems implications of regulatory changes (e.g., VM-22 adoption), reinsurance structure evolution, investment management transitions, and entity-level changes before they become execution problems
- Identify gaps, redundancies, and integration risks across the Finance technology stack; develop recommendations for rationalization or enhancement
- Support organizational scalability planning for the domain, including anticipating whether future scope — such as Enterprise Financial Systems or the growing Reinsurance Platform — may warrant additional dedicated product or platform capacity over time
Product Management Practice & Governance
- Establish/ Maintain domain-level standards for Epic definition, roadmap construction, outcome measurement, and stakeholder engagement
- Lead retrospectives and capability assessments of the product management practice within the domain; identify and implement systemic improvements
- Own cross-team product dependencies and alignment across three or more product areas within the domain, including Finance systems and the Reinsurance Platform
- Resolve cross-product roadmap conflicts escalated by Senior Product Managers within the domain
- Partner with Platform Leads on platform decisions that affect multiple product teams within the domain, including the Enterprise Financial Systems Platform team and the Reinsurance Platform team
- Represent the Finance & Reinsurance domain's product management perspective at Cross-Team Sync and portfolio governance forums
- Review domain-level QPE outcomes for systemic issues and patterns across Finance and Reinsurance product areas
Finance Business Partnership
- Serve as the primary liaison between Finance functional leaders and Technology, including Technology Vendor Management
- Work closely with Finance functional leaders in FP&A, Reporting, Treasury, Tax, and Actuarial to deeply understand operational pain points, workflow inefficiencies, and unmet capability needs
- Serve as a trusted resource and subject matter expert for Finance functional leaders on systems questions, removing the burden of systems expertise from their core responsibilities
- Partner with Finance functional leaders to gain visibility into ongoing strategic Finance initiatives, improving transparency and coordination across quarterly planning.
- Facilitate effective prioritization across competing Finance functional demands, escalating to Finance and Growth Office leadership when trade-offs require executive input
Technology & Vendor Governance
- Establish and maintain a regular governance rhythm with Product Managers and Technology Vendor Management to keep roadmap execution and vendor activity synchronized
- Participate in Technology project intake and prioritization forums to advocate for Finance and Reinsurance requirements with clarity and specificity
- Partner with the VP of Technology Vendor Management on vendor strategy for Finance-adjacent systems, providing business requirements and outcome ownership while Technology manages contracting and relationship execution
- Evaluate emerging technologies and vendor capabilities relevant to insurance finance operations and present recommendations to Finance leadership
Project & Delivery Oversight
- Provide Finance-side oversight of systems projects in flight, monitoring progress against scope, timeline, and business objectives
- Elevate delivery risks early and work proactively with Technology and Product/Platform teams to resolve blockers
- Ensure Finance stakeholders are appropriately engaged throughout project lifecycles, from requirements definition through user acceptance and go-live
- Track and report on the Finance systems project portfolio status to Finance leadership
PM Talent Development (Domain-Wide)
- Serve as primary mentor for Senior and Professional Product Managers within the domain, formally accountable for their growth trajectory, capability development, and career progress — through informal 1:1 development conversations distinct from day-to-day work check-ins
- Own the hiring bar and interview loop design for Product Manager roles within the domain
- Contribute to the enterprise-wide product management community of practice, alongside Lead PMs from other domains
- Onboard and orient new Product Managers within the domain to SB's delivery model, product management standards, and Finance/Reinsurance domain context
Direct People Management (Enterprise Financial Systems Platform Team)
- Provide day-to-day supervisory oversight for direct reports
- Conduct regular 1:1 coaching conversations, performance check-ins, and development planning sessions with direct reports
- Set clear performance expectations, provide timely feedback, and document developmental progress for direct reports
- Partner with HRBP and Growth Office leadership on performance concerns, compensation discussions, and growth planning for direct reports
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent work experience; Master's degree or CPA preferred
- 8+ years of product management experience, including demonstrated, sustained strategic impact across multiple product areas within a domain — typically following 2+ years of strong performance as a Senior Product Manager
- Meaningful exposure to Finance systems strategy, implementation, or transformation (e.g., ERP/GL, FP&A, actuarial, or reinsurance reporting systems)
- Demonstrated cross-team influence across three or more product or platform teams within a domain
- Experience designing product management frameworks, playbooks, or capability programs
- Track record of driving measurable business outcomes at the domain level through product leadership, not just within a single product area
- Experience advising VP/Director-level stakeholders on product strategy and investment decisions, where that input materially shapes the resulting decision
- Demonstrated experience developing or coaching other Product Managers toward measurable growth outcomes
- Exceptional communication skills: able to speak the language of Finance and Reinsurance to business leaders and the language of requirements to Technology and vendors
- Strong project management instincts, with experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives
- Experience providing formal supervisory people management — coaching, performance management, and development planning — for direct reports
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in insurance, financial services, or a similarly regulated industry with multi-entity complexity
- Familiarity with statutory and regulatory reporting requirements relevant to life insurance or annuity companies (NAIC, RBC, AM Best)
- Background in or significant exposure to investment accounting, actuarial platforms, or reinsurance reporting systems
- SAFe Product Management certification or equivalent enterprise product leadership credential
- Experience building or scaling a product management practice within a maturing organization
- Demonstrated thought leadership through internal programs, communities of practice, or cross-functional working groups
- Experience working in a PE-backed or holding company structure with affiliated entity complexity
- Big 4 or management consulting background with a finance systems or finance transformation focus
