Role Summary This is a hands-on Database Platform role requiring strong technical expertise alongside excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery, migration, administration and continual improvement of enterprise database platforms across both on-premises and Microsoft Azure environments. The role will include supporting strategic migration programmes from on-premises infrastructure to Azure, as well as the ongoing management and optimisation of database services hosted across Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions. The successful candidate will ensure database platform operational readiness through effective monitoring, security, performance tuning, backup and recovery, high availability, disaster recovery and capacity management practices. Working closely with application, infrastructure, cloud engineering and project delivery teams, they will provide technical leadership and support throughout the database lifecycle. The databases maintained support critical enterprise applications and business services. The role requires an individual who can work independently while collaborating effectively across multiple technical and business teams. ________________________________________ Core Duties / Responsibilities The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Manage and support enterprise database platforms across multiple environments, including development, test, UAT, production and disaster recovery. 2. Deliver and support database migration projects from on-premises environments to Microsoft Azure, including assessment, planning, execution, cutover and post-migration activities. 3. Administer and maintain database platforms deployed across Azure IaaS virtual machines, Azure PaaS database services and integrated SaaS solutions. 4. Configure and maintain database servers, instances and services to ensure high levels of performance, availability, scalability and security. 5. Monitor database health, performance and capacity, proactively identifying risks and implementing improvements. 6. Implement and maintain backup, recovery, high availability and disaster recovery solutions in both on-premises and cloud environments. 7. Investigate, troubleshoot and resolve complex database platform issues, providing end-to-end ownership through to resolution. 8. Support application development and engineering teams with database design, deployment, performance optimisation and best practices. 9. Drive automation and standardisation initiatives using scripting, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and cloud-native tooling. 10. Support database security, governance, compliance and auditing requirements in accordance with organisational standards. 11. Perform database release activities, environment provisioning and change implementations, including out-of-hours support where required. 12. Produce and maintain operational documentation, support procedures, architectural standards and migration runbooks. 13. Provide technical mentorship, knowledge sharing and cross-training to colleagues and wider technology teams. 14. Collaborate with cloud, infrastructure, security and application teams to deliver resilient and scalable database platform solutions. 15. Participate in on-call support and major incident management activities for business-critical services where required. Location The role is based in our Bangalore/Chennai office. Working hours align with a UK working day. There will be a requirement to support planned maintenance, migration activities and service-impacting changes outside of standard business hours. ________________________________________ Skills, Attributes and Behaviour The successful candidate will demonstrate the following experience, skills and behaviours: 1. Extensive experience administering enterprise database platforms, hosted on SQL Server (primary RDBMS), and well as PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL or equivalent technologies for the future. 2. Experience delivering database migrations from on-premises infrastructure to Microsoft Azure. 3. Strong knowledge of Azure database technologies, including Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Database for PostgreSQL and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines. 4. Experience supporting database solutions deployed across Azure IaaS, PaaS and SaaS environments. 5. Strong understanding of database performance tuning, optimisation and troubleshooting techniques using both native and third-party monitoring tools. 6. Experience implementing and supporting backup, restore and disaster recovery strategies. 7. Knowledge of high availability technologies, clustering, replication and business continuity solutions. 8. Experience with automation and scripting technologies such as PowerShell, T-SQL, Terraform , Azure CLI or Infrastructure as Code tooling. 9. Familiarity with Azure monitoring, security, governance and operational management practices. 10. Experience working within ITIL-based support and change management processes. 11. Strong understanding of database security principles, identity management and access controls. 12. Experience working with Windows Server, Active Directory and cloud identity services. 13. Excellent written, verbal and stakeholder communication skills. 14. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a proactive, service-oriented approach. 15. Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt effectively within a rapidly changing technical environment. 16. Flexible, collaborative and delivery-focused team player with a strong commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence. 17. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within cross-functional teams.
