Job Summary

The Database Engineer (Multi-Platform) is responsible for designing, implementing, administering, securing, and optimising enterprise database environments across on-premises and cloud platforms. The role combines deep technical delivery with strong presales capability, supporting database modernisation, migrations, high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR), performance optimisation, platform selection, and managed database services. The role will work across Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, NoSQL technologies including MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB, and Cosmos DB and cloud-native database services. The successful candidate will translate business requirements into scalable solutions, guide customers through transformation programmes, and contribute to the growth and continuous improvement of the database services portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Presales and Solution Consulting

  • Lead technical discovery sessions to understand customer objectives, application dependencies, data profiles, operational constraints, security requirements, and service-level expectations.
  • Assess current database estates and recommend appropriate platforms, target architectures, modernisation pathways, and migration strategies.
  • Design secure, scalable, highly available, and cost-effective solutions across relational, NoSQL, and cloud-native database technologies.
  • Prepare responses to RFPs and RFQs, solution proposals, bills of materials, effort estimates, implementation plans, technical presentations, and statements of work.
  • Deliver solution demonstrations, workshops, proofs of concept, and technical presentations for customer and internal stakeholder audiences.
  • Develop database sizing, licensing, capacity, total cost of ownership, and return-on-investment models to support customer decisions.
  • Collaborate with sales, cloud, infrastructure, security, application, and project teams to produce complete and commercially viable solutions.

Database Engineering and Service Delivery

  • Install, configure, patch, upgrade, administer, and decommission Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, and supported NoSQL platforms across on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Design, implement, test, and support HA/DR architectures, including Oracle Data Guard/Active Data Guard, SQL Server Always On, PostgreSQL streaming replication, MySQL clustering, and cloud-native resilience.
  • Define and maintain backup, restore, recovery, retention, and disaster-recovery procedures; conduct regular recovery tests and document outcomes.
  • Monitor database availability, capacity, performance, and security; investigate incidents and deliver root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Optimise database performance through workload analysis, query tuning, indexing, configuration reviews, and capacity planning.
  • Implement database security controls covering access management, privileged accounts, encryption, patching, auditing, vulnerability remediation, and compliance requirements.
  • Plan and execute migrations from on-premises to cloud, cloud to cloud, and between database engines while minimising service disruption and data risk.
  • Administer and optimise cloud-native database services, including Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Amazon RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, and Cosmos DB.
  • Automate repeatable administration, monitoring, deployment, patching, and reporting activities using appropriate scripting and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Produce and maintain high-level and low-level designs, standard operating procedures, runbooks, architecture diagrams, configuration records, and operational documentation.
  • Support service transition, knowledge transfer, operational readiness, and handover to managed-service or customer support teams.
  • Contribute to incident, problem, change, capacity, availability, and service-level management processes.
  • Improve database service offerings, standards, reusable assets, governance controls, delivery methods, and SLAs based on lessons learned and emerging technology.

  • Experience planning or delivering database migrations to cloud platforms, between cloud environments, or across database engines.
  • Ability to create solution designs, implementation plans, migration runbooks, test plans, operational procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Experience supporting presales activities, including discovery, solution design, estimation, proposal development, demonstrations, and customer presentations.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, stakeholder-management, and customer-engagement skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work independently and collaboratively, and participate in planned after-hours implementation or support activities when required.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Hands-on experience with MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB, Cosmos DB, or other NoSQL platforms.
