HOW MIGHT YOU DEFY IMAGINATION?
You’ve earned your degree. How will you use that achievement to reach your goals? Do more with the knowledge you’ve worked hard to acquire and the passion you already have. At Amgen, our shared mission—to serve patients—drives all that we do. It is key to our becoming one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies, reaching over 10 million patients worldwide. Become the professional you are meant to be in this meaningful role.
About the role
DDS is seeking a hands-on Senior Data Scientist with strong full stack development and Databricks experience to build and operate data and analytics applications for global R&D users. You will translate business requirements into working application features, developing user interfaces, Python backend services, database integrations and Databricks pipelines, and owning delivery through testing, deployment and production support.
You will work with global DDS leaders, R&D business partners and IS/DTI teams. The role requires demonstrated experience delivering production web applications and integrating data, analytical models and automation into practical user workflows.
What you will do
· Partner with product owners and R&D users to define requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria. Break business problems into application features with clear delivery priorities.
· Build and maintain responsive web applications using React, TypeScript, HTML and CSS, including forms, state management, API integration and interactive data visualization.
· Design and develop Python backend services and REST APIs with clear contracts, input validation, authentication, authorization and consistent error handling.
· Design relational data models and integrate application data with enterprise sources. Write efficient SQL, manage schema migrations and troubleshoot database performance.
· Build Databricks pipelines using PySpark, Spark SQL and Delta Lake. Schedule and monitor jobs, manage governed data access, and connect pipeline outputs to applications through APIs or SQL endpoints.
· Integrate analytical models, data pipelines and AI/ML capabilities into applications where they address a defined business need. Monitor the quality and reliability of those integrations.
· Write automated unit, API integration and critical user workflow tests. Participate in code reviews and maintain technical documentation for application development and support.
· Build and maintain CI/CD workflows, package applications in containers and deploy releases to cloud environments in partnership with IS/DTI. Manage configuration and release changes.
· Own application and Databricks pipeline support, including logging, monitoring, issue triage and resolution. Diagnose failures across the frontend, backend, database and data jobs, and improve performance and reliability.
· Collaborate across geographies with regular working-hour overlap. Follow Amgen SOPs and requirements for data governance, security and privacy, and contribute through technical mentoring and knowledge sharing.
What you will bring
Basic qualifications

· Strong hands-on experience with React, TypeScript or JavaScript, HTML and CSS, including responsive and accessible interfaces, state management and integration with backend APIs.
· Hands-on Python backend development and REST API design using FastAPI, Django, Flask or an equivalent framework, including access control, validation and error handling.
· Strong SQL and relational database skills using PostgreSQL or a comparable platform, including data modelling, query optimization, transactions and schema migrations.
· Hands-on Databricks experience with PySpark, Spark SQL and Delta Lake, including developing, scheduling, monitoring and troubleshooting production data pipelines and jobs.
· Experience with Git, pull requests, code reviews, automated testing and CI/CD pipelines, with practical ownership of releases and defect resolution.
· Experience deploying and supporting cloud applications on AWS or a comparable platform, including containers, environment configuration, secrets management, logging and monitoring.
· Ability to integrate data pipelines and analytical outputs into usable application workflows, communicate with non-technical stakeholders and deliver independently in a distributed team.
Preferred experience
· 6+ years delivering enterprise software, data applications or analytics products, with recent hands-on full stack development.
· Experience integrating statistical, predictive, AI/ML or GenAI capabilities into production applications.
· Experience in pharma, biotech or another regulated industry, working with global stakeholders and supporting governed data.
