The Role:

This Senior Full-stack Java Engineer - Futures & Derivatives Clearing Technology role is a senior-level software engineering leadership role embedded within Citi's Exchange-Traded Derivatives (ETD) Clearing technology organization, responsible for driving platform modernization and delivering strategic, business-critical capabilities across a global clearing infrastructure. The position sits at the intersection of hands-on Java development, cloud-native architecture, and engineering leadership supporting real-time message flows from global futures markets while leading the replacement of legacy product processors. The ideal candidate will bring deep enterprise engineering expertise, a track record of leading distributed teams, and a demonstrated commitment to AI-assisted software development practices. Responsibilities

  • Deliver strategic initiatives within the ETD Clearing portfolio using Agile methodologies, partnering with business and technology stakeholders to achieve measurable outcomes.
  • Lead the design and delivery of scalable, secure, and resilient cloud-native applications, APIs, and services aligned with Citi's architecture and engineering standards.
  • Perform hands-on Java-based development and provide L3 production support for the core ETD Clearing platform, including real-time message flows from global futures markets.
  • Drive platform transformation efforts, including the replacement of legacy product processors and the adoption of modern cloud, containerization, and distributed systems technologies.
  • Champion the adoption of AI-assisted software engineering tools to accelerate development cycles, automate processes, and improve troubleshooting efficiency.
  • Establish and maintain CI/CD, DevOps, and observability practices to enhance platform stability, reliability, and time-to-market.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams across global regions including Pune, India and with ETD technology leads to coordinate release planning and delivery.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, promote technical best practices, and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration across engineering, QA, product, and business teams to deliver high-quality, reusable enterprise capabilities.
  • Manage technical risk, application health, and regulatory compliance in alignment with Citi's standards for client and asset protection.
  • Drive engineering excellence through automation, testability, reusability, and operational rigor across the full software development lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of hands-on software engineering experience delivering enterprise-scale applications in complex, global environments.
  • Deep expertise in Java-based application development, including Spring Boot, microservices architecture, and distributed systems design.
  • Hands-on experience with messaging platforms such as Kafka, IBM MQ, or Solace in high-throughput, low-latency environments.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and operating cloud-native applications on container platforms such as OpenShift, Kubernetes, and Docker.
  • Strong understanding of API design, application security, and authentication and authorization frameworks, with a commitment to secure software development practices.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability tooling, and performance monitoring using technologies such as Git, Maven/Gradle, OpenTelemetry, and Grafana.
  • Experience with caching and performance optimization technologies such as Redis or Couchbase.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI-assisted software engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot or Devin to improve developer productivity, code quality, and delivery velocity.
  • Proven track record working in Agile environments, leading technical initiatives, and mentoring engineers across globally distributed teams.
  • Experience within financial services, preferably supporting Trade Processing, Clearing, Middle Office, or related capital markets platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate ambiguity and deliver results under tight timelines.
  • Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trusted partnerships across business and technology organizations.
  • Experience with Spring Cloud and cloud-native Java technologies is preferred.
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures and high-volume, low-latency systems within capital markets is preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Technology, related degree, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Master's degree preferred.
