Description

You’ll play an essential role to make sure Silverstone, and its main stakeholders are all Shifting to Zero, getting involved in developing and implementing our ESG strategy that will build a long-lasting legacy within the region and our organisation and allow you to develop your career.

 JOB PURPOSE 

Reporting to the Head of ESG, this role will contribute to the development and implementation of the Silverstone ESG Strategy. The primary focus will be to lead the environmental data collection, management and assessment (energy, water, waste, carbon) from internal and external stakeholders and lead, with external third parties, a comprehensive carbon reporting and our ESG certification process. This includes leading data insights and continually reviewing performance against our net zero strategy and wider climate transition plan. 

As we expand our ESG strategy to consider social impact and community engagement, this role also involves robust social metric data collection and review – working with our People and Culture team to collect meaningful impact data and inform our social impact strategy. Ultimately, we hope to create a robust environmental and social impact monitoring approach across the organisation to present the value of our E, S, G programme to internal and external stakeholders. 

This role would suit someone with an extensive understanding of sustainability and proven experience in implementing change strategies in companies, specifically assisting with decarbonisation roadmap. You need to be highly organised, data passionate with great reporting skills and a great problem solver attitude.

Key Responsibilities

ESG data collection and performance

  • Monitor and report on sustainability performance, using key performance indicators (KPIs) and objectives and key results (OKRs) to measure progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • Own the tracking and management of Silverstone’s ESG targets and support the production of internal and external sustainability / ESG reports.
  • Monitor waste disposal and recycling levels on a day-to-day basis and during all events.
  • Produce waste and recycling reports and insights that inform the business, including progress against our net zero pathway.
  • Identify common thematic challenges across teams and coordinate tools, tracking mechanisms, and resources to support improvement, resulting in the delivery of a centralised ESG data matrix.
  • Research and document sustainability best practices within the sport and leisure industry, and design processes and improvement plans to assess the sustainability baseline of Silverstone’s different departments, streamline support, create efficiencies, and empower teams in the successful implementation of sustainability programmes across the organisation.

Operational and strategic ESG support

  • Proactively identify and propose areas of improvement that could accelerate the success of Silverstone’s ESG strategy.
  • Own SCL’s carbon footprint calculations and analysis across events and corporate operations, producing the annual carbon footprint report and using insights to inform the net zero pathway.
  • Support the delivery and continuous improvement of the climate transition plan across the business.
  • Investigate key sustainability initiatives and practices within the sports and events industry, channelling the latest ESG trends and considering them when developing Silverstone’s own initiatives.
  • Ensure ESG-related projects are well coordinated with key stakeholders, delivered on time, on budget, and to high quality standards.

ESG disclosures and reporting

  • Coordinate and lead submissions to third-party recognition systems (e.g. FIA Environmental Accreditation and other sustainability-related systems/accreditations), including environmental and social data collection.
  • Coordinate and lead submissions to our signatory frameworks, including but not limited to UN Sports for Climate Action, UN Sports for Nature, and F1 / FIA reporting as necessary.
  • Lead reporting for ESOS and F1 carbon reporting.

Compliance

  • Keep abreast of changes to ESG legislation and practices to ensure business procedures and policies remain current, and regularly report updates to the ESG team and relevant internal departments.

Stakeholder engagement and communication

  • Effectively manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure accurate and consistent measurement of ESG performance data, and produce internal and external reporting on progress towards ESG objectives and targets.
  • Review and evaluate progress against the delivery of our ESG strategy, including setting benchmarks and thresholds for ESG performance.
  • Evaluate relevant sustainability technology and innovation proposals, translating concepts and ideas into practical steps and plans.
  • Generate and deliver sustainability communication briefings to the Head of ESG, and participate in internal and external ESG working groups.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

You have:

  • Experience supporting and implementing sustainability programmes, with a track record of practical delivery against publicly stated environmental and social goals in a major organisation.
  • Experience working with large datasets – cleansing, assessing, managing and benchmarking data to drive performance.
  • A proven ability to define, implement and deliver ESG commitments on time and within budget.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to produce clear reports and policies.
  • The ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment, with an agile and pragmatic working style.
  • Broad knowledge of environmental planning and sustainability practices, as well as strong communication, analytical and organisational skills.

  • Knowledge of ISO 14001, ISO 20121 and relevant environmental certifications.
  • Knowledge of carbon footprinting and reduction planning, net zero, SECR/ESOS reporting and climate transition plans.
  • Understanding of life cycle assessment and sustainability resource management (including energy, water, waste and materials).
  • A collaborative team player with excellent project management skills.
  • The ability to interact effectively at different levels of management, and with consultants and event organisers.
  • Fluency in English (corporate language).

Desirable:

  • Sustainability / ESG data analyst background and/or an MSc in a business- or sustainability-related subject.
  • A strong interest in the events and sports industry.
