Full description
Senior Financial Analyst
MAKO is putting shark skin on planes to save fuel and cut emissions.
Aviation burns roughly 100 billion gallons of fuel a year. Our riblet film makes aircraft slip through the air more cleanly, and every percent of drag we remove is fuel that never gets burned and CO2 that never gets emitted.
Turning a great technology into a real business takes funding, and a clear view of where it's going. That's where this role comes in. You'll help build MAKO's forward-looking view of our finances: budgets, forecasting, and modelling, and help teams across the business understand the financial impact of the decisions they're making. You'll report to our Senior Finance Manager.
What You Will Do
- Manage the grant portfolio. Monitor spend and budget-to-actuals, build budgets for new grant projects, contribute to grant reporting, and keep every dollar inside the guidelines
- Make budgeting something teams actually use. Partner with teams on annual and quarterly budgets, then run monthly budget-to-actual analysis and tell us plainly where the risks, the opportunities, and the savings are
- Drive the runway view. Prepare monthly cash flow forecasts and grow into broader forecasting and planning as the role develops
- Power the big calls. Use modelling and scenario analysis to help leadership choose between real options, with real numbers behind them
- Build the tools. Our reporting, dashboards, planning tools, and finance processes are yours to improve
What Success Looks Like
- First month: You know where the money is. You understand MAKO's financial position, our grants, our budgets, and how reporting works today. You've met the grant and budget owners across the business, and you can already name the gaps
- First six months: Our grants are tight: clear visibility over budgets, spend, remaining funding, and reporting deadlines. Budgeting and budget-to-actual processes are running reliably, and teams are genuinely managing their own numbers. Cash flow and runway forecasting is accurate, current, and something leadership actually leans on
- First year: People come to you before they make decisions, not after. Forecasting, planning, and management reporting have matured into a clear forward-looking view of performance, runway, risks, and opportunities, and your modelling is shaping commercial and strategic calls as we scale
About You
- Qualified Chartered Accountant with experience in financial analysis, FP&A, management accounting, commercial finance, or similar
- You can explain a number to an engineer, a scientist, or a CEO, and have each of them walk away knowing what to do about it
- Advanced Excel skills, excellent attention to detail, and strong time management and organisational skills
- Comfortable building things that don't exist yet
- Big-4, government grants, or R&D funding experience is a bonus, not essential
Why You Should Join MAKO
- Impact: Aviation is one of the hardest to abate industries, and its share of global emissions is only growing. Join our mission to improve the efficiency of the global fleet and save millions of tonnes of CO2 every year
- Technology: Our technology leverages the drag-reducing properties of shark skin to make aircraft more efficient. You'll be exposed to expertise and developments in materials, photolithography, fluid dynamics, and scale manufacturing
- Team: Our team focuses on achieving our mission. We live our values of lift over drag, active transparency, and changing the boundary conditions, and we welcome new team members who want to do the same
- Corporate Jet: We have (most of) a corporate jet. It won't fly, but it sure does look cool
