Software and Data Engineer I – II

On-site, Branford, CT (must be willing to relocate to the Bridgeport/Stamford area within one year of the start date)

 About Oxylus Energy

Oxylus Energy is a climate-tech company building solutions that can scale. Our breakthrough electrochemical technology converts carbon dioxide into low-carbon fuels and chemicals, reducing the world's dependence on fossil fuels. We are a team of scientists, engineers, and problem solvers working to make that future real.

 Job brief

As Software and Data Engineer, you will own the software that connects our lab to our data. You will develop and maintain the interfaces to our electrochemical test stations and analytical equipment, integrate them into a reliable data pipeline, and manage the databases where our experimental data lives. You will also build and continually improve the tools our scientists and engineers use to retrieve, plot, and analyze their results.

This is a hands-on role at the boundary of software and hardware. You will spend time in the lab working with instruments and test stations, and you will work closely with our electrochemists, materials scientists, and engineers to understand what they need from their data. You will collaborate closely with our controls engineers, who own station automation, to make sure every experiment produces complete, well-organized, and easily accessible data. We are hiring at the Engineer I or II level and will match the title to your experience.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and maintain software interfaces to electrochemical test stations and analytical equipment, such as potentiostats, gas chromatographs, mass flow controllers, and other lab instruments.
  • Integrate data from test stations and instruments into a unified, automated data pipeline.
  • Design, manage, and maintain our cloud databases, including data models, access patterns, backups, and data quality checks.
  • Build and improve tools to retrieve, plot, and analyze experimental data, including dashboards, Python libraries, and web applications.
  • Implement consistent metadata and experiment tracking so every dataset can be traced to its test station, experiment, and conditions.
  • Work with scientists and engineers to understand their workflows and turn their needs into practical software tools.
  • Work with controls engineers on the interfaces between station automation and the data systems.
  • Write clean, tested, and documented code, and maintain version control and deployment practices.
  • Troubleshoot data and connectivity issues on lab equipment, and support users of our data tools.
  • At the Engineer II level:
  • Own the overall data architecture, set coding and data standards, and lead larger software projects from design to deployment.
  • Fully develop the company’s data collection and analysis platform.

Who You Are

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, with experience matching the level:
  • Engineer I: B.S. with 1–3 years, or M.S. with some relevant experience (internships, co-ops, and hands-on projects count).
  • Engineer II: B.S. with 3+ years, or M.S. with 1–3 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Experience using AI coding tools effectively.
  • Experience with databases (SQL or NoSQL) and data modeling.
  • Experience building data visualization or analysis tools.
  • Interest in working with lab hardware and comfort working in a lab environment.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and good software engineering practices.
  • Highly attentive to detail, with strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Good written, verbal, and presentation skills, including explaining technical topics to non-software colleagues.

Nice to Have

  • Experience interfacing with lab instruments or industrial equipment, for example through serial, TCP/IP, Modbus, or vendor APIs and SDKs.
  • Experience with AI-powered data analysis.
  • Programming skills in C++/JavaScript/HTML/CSS.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, such as AWS, and with NoSQL databases.
  • A background or coursework in chemistry, electrochemistry, or another experimental science.

Salary

  • Engineer I: USD 80,000 – 90,000 per year base salary commensurate with experience, education, and skills.
  • Engineer II: USD 90,000 – 100,000 per year base salary commensurate with experience, education, and skills.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid sick days and vacation
  • 401k match
  • A diverse and inclusive work environment
