Senior Business Intelligence Developer
SmartLight Analytics Plano, Texas, United States · $120K–$145K/yr
Data Infrastructure and Analytics · 51-200 employees
About the role
The role involves migrating legacy SQL Server logic to a modern Snowflake data platform while building governed data marts. You will also develop dashboards in Sigma and partner with business stakeholders to ensure accurate, decision-ready reporting.
What they look for
Requirements
Candidates must have senior-level experience in BI development or analytics engineering with strong SQL and data modeling expertise. Proficiency in Snowflake, Sigma, and experience with healthcare data or HIPAA compliance is highly preferred.
Full description
SmartLight is actively migrating its data platform from SQL Server to Snowflake. This role is central to that transition. A significant portion of the work involves reverse-engineering existing legacy SQL Server logic — stored procedures, views, and embedded report queries — and re-architecting it into clean, performant Snowflake data marts. The successful candidate must be equally comfortable reading and decomposing legacy SQL Server code and building its modern equivalent in Snowflake, ensuring that business logic is preserved, improved, and properly governed as it moves to the new platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain governed data marts in Snowflake that serve as the single source of truth for business reporting.
- Develop, publish, and maintain dashboards and reports in Sigma that deliver clear, decision-ready insight to business stakeholders.
- Reverse-engineer legacy SQL Server logic (stored procedures, views, queries) and translate it into well-structured Snowflake models as part of the platform migration.
- Partner directly with business SMEs to capture reporting requirements, then own delivery from inception through final report — relieving SMEs of self-service report-building.
- Establish and document consistent business definitions and metric logic so that numbers reconcile across the organization.
- Apply data modeling best practices (dimensional modeling, reusable semantic layers) to ensure marts are performant, maintainable, and scalable.
- Build with data governance, quality, and HIPAA-aligned handling in mind, given the sensitivity of healthcare claims data.
- Contribute to reporting standards, naming conventions, and documentation that reduce key-person risk and support audit readiness.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated senior-level experience as a BI Developer, Analytics Engineer, or equivalent, delivering production data marts and reporting.
- Strong SQL expertise, including the ability to read, decompose, and refactor complex legacy SQL Server code (stored procedures, views).
- Hands-on experience building data models and marts in Snowflake (or comparable cloud data warehouse with clear ability to transition).
- Proficiency building dashboards and reports in Sigma (or a comparable modern BI tool with demonstrated ability to ramp quickly on Sigma).
- Solid grounding in dimensional/data modeling and semantic-layer design.
- Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into finished, self-explanatory reporting with minimal oversight.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in healthcare, healthcare claims, or another regulated data environment (HIPAA/PHI).
- Direct experience with SQL Server-to-Snowflake migrations.
- Familiarity with dbt or similar transformation/orchestration tooling.
- Experience establishing a BI/reporting function or standards where none previously existed.
Impact
Within the first year, this role will consolidate today's scattered, SME-built reporting into a governed Snowflake-and-Sigma reporting layer that the business trusts, freeing subject-matter experts to focus on domain and client work, and establishing the scalable analytics foundation that supports SmartLight's continued growth.
