Technical Writer

Work Mode: Onsite

Location: Onsite, four days per week – Kohler, WI

Opportunity

Supports the development, review, and execution of technical communication deliverables for kitchen and bath products, including publications, labels and packaging, and animations. Works under the guidance of experienced Technical Communications team members to gather information, draft content, follow established standards, and complete assigned documentation tasks.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists with planning, scheduling, organizing, and tracking assigned Technical Communications deliverables; communicates status, risks, and questions to project leads and team members.
  • Participates as a Technical Communications contributor on product development teams for assigned projects, with guidance from senior team members or project leads.
  • Learns regional and business requirements and assists in defining scope, timing, and execution needs for Technical Communication deliverables.
  • Drafts, updates, and supports quality reviews of technical product literature as assigned, including product information, installation, use, and/or servicing content.
  • Reviews technical content and usability of publications with guidance; applies established Technical Communications requirements, standards, and processes.
  • Contributes ideas for improving Technical Communications processes and participates in team initiatives as assigned.
  • Builds technical communication knowledge through internal training, feedback, and professional development opportunities.
  • Other responsibilities and tasks as assigned.

Skills/Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Communications, or other related discipline.
  • Coursework, internship, co-op, portfolio, or up to 2 years of experience in technical writing, product documentation, instructional content, or a related communication field.
  • Computer aptitude and demonstrated writing proficiency. Typing skills are essential for productivity.
  • Demonstrated visualization skills – the ability to translate between two- and three-dimensional data views.
  • Basic familiarity with structured or tagged language authoring concepts, such as HTML or XML, or willingness to learn.
  • Basic proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, and standard office productivity tools.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage assigned tasks while learning to balance multiple priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and ask effective questions to clarify assignments and requirements.

Preferred:

  • Exposure to plumbing product installation, design, manufacturing, documentation, or a related technical field through coursework, internship, co-op, previous employment, or hands-on experience.
  • Exposure to structured or tagged language authoring.
  • Exposure to XML/DITA concepts.
  • Exposure to content management systems or reusable content concepts.
  • Mechanical aptitude, curiosity, and ability to learn how to read technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with CAD or Pro/E, Creo, Adobe Illustrator, or Arbortext IsoDraw.
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign.
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar enterprise systems.
