The Tsung/Chen Lab in the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Biostatistician / Data Scientist to join our team and support clinical and health-outcomes research.
Responsibilities include:
- Design and conduct statistical analyses for clinical and observational research studies
- Apply advanced analytic methods, including machine learning and deep learning, to large-scale medical datasets
- Work with national medical databases such as Medicare, the National Cancer Database (NCDB), and Epic Cosmos, as well as institutional clinical data
- Provide statistical support for grant proposals, including study design, power/sample-size calculations, and analysis plans
- Collaborate with investigators to develop study designs, analysis plans, and manuscripts
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: MS degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field
- Experience: Five years of related research experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong foundation in statistical analysis and study design
- Proficiency in data science methods (machine learning, deep learning)
- Programming and package experience with SQL, R/Python, SAS, and Stata
- Experience with large medical/administrative databases and clinical data analysis
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
The hiring range is $85,000-105,000, commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
This position has a term limit of 1 year after which continued employment will depend
on department need and funding.
This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
