IBM DB2 z/OS Support & Automation Engineer

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced IBM DB2 z/OS professional to provide operational support, implement Rundeck backup automation, assist with DB2 V13 upgrades, assess z/OS lifecycle supportability, modernize automation workflows, and deliver comprehensive documentation and knowledge transfer.

Key Responsibilities

IBM DB2 z/OS Support

● Provide day-to-day IBM DB2 operational support on z/OS. ● Support database refresh activities and generate DR/RR dumps. ● Troubleshoot DB2 issues triggered through application workflows or Rundeck. ● Act as the primary DB2/z/OS Subject Matter Expert.

Rundeck Backup and Automation

● Assess the existing Rundeck environment hosted on OCI virtual machines. ● Design, configure, and validate a backup Rundeck environment on OCI. ● Replicate jobs, scripts, plugins, configurations, and credentials securely. ● Ensure the backup environment can take over during primary-environment failure. ● Test artifact generation, dump-file extraction, and database creation workflows. ● Document backup, restoration, and failover procedures.

Automation Version Control and Documentation

● Inventory all Rundeck jobs, scripts, and automation assets. ● Store automation code and job definitions in Git or another version-control system. ● Prepare SOPs covering job execution, failure handling, and recovery. ● Create operational runbooks for routine support activities. ● Support switching between primary and backup Rundeck environments. DB2 V12 to V13 Upgrade ● Assess DB2 V13 installation and subsystem readiness. ● Identify and resolve integration issues between DB2 V12 and V13. ● Review relevant IBM PMRs and incorporate findings into internal documentation. ● Support DB2 V13 integration, compliance validation, and cutover planning. z/OS Lifecycle and Supportability ● Assess the current z/OS version and lifecycle status. ● Identify end-of-life and supportability risks. ● Recommend necessary upgrades or remediation measures. ● Ensure DB2 workloads remain fully supported on z/OS. Automation Modernization ● Identify Reflection-based scripts used for dump-file generation. ● Design and implement a supported replacement solution. ● Validate that the new automation reliably generates and tests database files. Workflow Analysis ● Reverse engineer and document workflows across Rundeck, DB2, z/OS, and downstream systems. ● Identify triggers, dependencies, hand-offs, and job-triggering mechanisms. ● Document primary and backup Rundeck execution paths. ● Eliminate undocumented or single-person operational dependencies. Security and Access Assessment ● Identify system IDs, service accounts, and credentials used across Rundeck, DB2, and z/OS. ● Document account ownership, usage, and access levels. ● Identify governance or security gaps and recommend remediation. Knowledge Transfer ● Provide hands-on training to the designated backup resource. ● Conduct cross-training on DB2 support, DB2 V13, z/OS workflows, Rundeck environments, automation, and security. ● Ensure the backup resource can independently operate both Rundeck environments.

Required Skills

● Strong IBM DB2 administration and operational support experience on z/OS. ● Hands-on experience with Rundeck automation. ● Experience working with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. ● Expertise in disaster recovery, backups, restoration, and failover. ● Experience supporting DB2 version upgrades, preferably V12 to V13. ● Strong understanding of z/OS operations and lifecycle management. ● Experience modernizing and migrating automation scripts. ● Knowledge of Git or another version-control system. ● Strong troubleshooting, documentation, SOP, and knowledge-transfer capabilities.
