Help shape digitalization and automation plans, and develop digital twins, kinetic models, and simulations to improve fermentation understanding, optimization, and scale-up.
What they look for
Requirements
A degree in electrical, mechanical, data, chemical, or bioprocess engineering, or a related field, is required, along with strong Python and SQL skills and experience with data processing, automation, reporting, and GitHub. Candidates should understand industrial sensors, instrumentation, communication protocols, and equipment integration, and be proactive, collaborative, and comfortable working hands-on with both hardware and code.
Benefits
Full description
At MicroHarvest, we’re reinventing how the world produces protein — fast, sustainably, and at scale. By harnessing the power of microorganisms, we create nutritious proteins that can be made anywhere, helping solve one of humanity’s biggest challenges: feeding a growing world sustainably.
We’re now looking for a Bioprocess Data Engineer to connect the dots between biotechnology, engineering, and data — and help us build the digital backbone of our fermentation processes.
In this hands-on role, you’ll turn complex process data into meaningful insights, connect equipment and systems, and develop smart solutions that make our operations more efficient, reliable, and scalable. From solving everyday data challenges to shaping our long-term digitalization strategy, you'll play a key role in bringing our bioprocesses into the digital future.
What you’ll be doing:
- Connect the dots: Structure and standardize process data across our pilot plant, I&D activities, and other locations — creating a reliable foundation for data-driven decisions.
- Make data flow: Connect equipment, sensors, and systems (such as bioreactors, scales, and gas analyzers) to enable reliable, real-time data collection and integration.
- Turn data into insights: Develop automated calculations, reporting tools, data pipelines, and dashboards using Python, SQL, Power BI, or similar tools.
- Build smarter processes: Bridge the gap between bioprocess engineering, instrumentation, data engineering, and automation to improve how we capture, manage, and use process data.
- Shape our digital future: Help develop our long-term digitalization and automation roadmap, using our pilot plant as a testing ground for solutions that can scale to future industrial operations.
- Bring processes to life digitally: Work towards developing digital twin capabilities, kinetic models, and process simulations to improve fermentation process understanding, optimization, and scale-up.
- Collaborate across disciplines: Work closely with engineers, scientists, equipment vendors, and internal teams to define integration requirements and build practical, scalable solutions.
What you bring:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills, particularly in Python and SQL, with experience in data processing, automation, and reporting.
- Experience with version-controlled development using GitHub.
- Understanding of industrial sensors, instrumentation, communication protocols (such as OPC UA and Modbus), and equipment integration.
- Familiarity with dashboard development, data visualization, and user-friendly interfaces.
- A structured, proactive mindset and the ability to turn complex technical challenges into practical solutions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to connect people and ideas across engineering, biology, and data.
- A hands-on attitude — you're just as comfortable working with hardware on-site as you are writing code.
- Curiosity, adaptability, and the motivation to build solutions in a fast-moving, evolving environment.
Bonus points for:
- Hands-on experience in an industrial or pilot-scale bioprocess environment.
- Knowledge of bioprocess calculations, fermentation processes, and process performance indicators.
- Familiarity with digital twin concepts, kinetic modelling, or process simulation tools.
- Experience using AI tools to accelerate development and improve workflows.
- Experience working in startups or scale-ups, where building systems from scratch is part of the adventure.
At MicroHarvest, you’ll be part of a fast-moving team where bold science meets hands-on action and real results. We offer:
- A high-impact role in a purpose-driven company changing the future of food.
- A collaborative, international team that celebrates curiosity and learning.
- Freedom to shape digital tools, processes, and systems — and see your solutions make a real difference.
- The opportunity to work at the intersection of biotechnology, engineering, and digital innovation, helping shape how we scale our technology.
Here, your work doesn't just connect data. It connects science, technology, and the future of sustainable food production.
Ready to turn data into impact? Send us your CV — we'd love to meet you.
