The Role

We are looking for a Platform Engineer to own configuration management and automation across our Linux and Windows estate, working hands-on with both Ansible and Chef. You will automate provisioning, hardening, patching and deployments, integrate configuration management into CI/CD pipelines, and help enforce compliance-as-code standards. You will also support migrations between automation platforms and mentor other engineers on automation best practice.

What You'll Do

  • Design, write and maintain Ansible playbooks, roles and

collections for provisioning and configuration.

  • Develop and maintain Chef cookbooks, recipes and

policies, and manage Chef Infra Server and Chef Automate.

  • Automate OS builds, hardening, patching and application

deployments across Linux and Windows estates.

  • Manage inventories, environments and secrets securely,

e.g. with Ansible Vault, HashiCorp Vault or Chef data bags.

  • Run Ansible Automation Platform (AWX / Tower) job

templates, workflows and RBAC.

  • Integrate configuration management into CI/CD pipelines

with automated testing (Molecule, Test Kitchen, InSpec).

  • Enforce CIS benchmarks and compliance-as-code to

support PCI-DSS, SOC 2 and ISO 27001 audits.

  • Provision cloud and on-premises infrastructure

alongside Terraform.

  • Support migrations from Chef to Ansible, or between

platform versions, where programmes require it.

  • Troubleshoot configuration drift, failed runs and

production incidents, and drive root-cause fixes.

  • Write clear runbooks and documentation, and mentor

engineers on automation best practice.

Requirements

Requirements

  • 5+ years in infrastructure, DevOps or platform

engineering, with 3+ years hands-on with Ansible and Chef in production.

  • Strong Ansible: playbooks, roles, Jinja2 templating,

dynamic inventories and custom modules.

  • Strong Chef: cookbooks, Policyfiles, Berkshelf, Chef

Infra Server and knife.

  • Ruby for Chef development, plus Python and Bash

scripting.

  • Deep Linux administration (RHEL, Ubuntu); working

knowledge of Windows Server automation.

  • Experience with at least one major cloud (AWS, Azure or

GCP) and with VMware or other on-premises virtualisation.

  • Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tooling.
  • Git workflows and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab

CI, GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps.

  • Infrastructure testing with Molecule, Test Kitchen or

InSpec.

  • Sound security fundamentals: hardening, secrets

management, least privilege and patch management.

  • Clear written and spoken English, and confidence

working with clients.
