About the role

The Senior Core Network Engineer will design, analyze, and implement 4G/5G core network architectures for non-terrestrial networks while providing technical mentorship to junior staff. They will also collaborate with partners on roaming network integration and contribute to international standardization bodies like 3GPP.

What they look for

Core Network Architecture 4G/5G Systems 3GPP Standards Telecommunications Engineering Network Function Virtualization Microservices C/C++ MATLAB VHDL CI/CD Git Systems Engineering Non-Terrestrial Networks Protocol Stack Development DSP Roaming Networks

Requirements

Candidates must hold at least a Master's degree in a relevant engineering field and possess over four years of professional experience in telecommunications and core network development. Proficiency in 3GPP systems, network protocols, and relevant programming languages like C/C++ is essential for this role.

Full description

As the Senior Core Network Engineer, you will bring advanced technical expertise to the Core Network architecture of the OQ Technology telecommunication network. You will perform senior-level core network design, analysis, and implementation activities, support engagements with external partners and contractors, and provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers within the team.

Tasks

The list below includes, but is not limited to, the tasks and responsibilities of the candidate. The Company may assign the Employee to any other job or tasks if it believes it is in its best interests to do so.

  • Explore, research, develop, and implement new functions, algorithms, and system architectures related to 3GPP-based 4G/5G communication core networks over Non-Terrestrial Networks.
  • Perform systems engineering, design, analysis, and experimentation to advance the reliability, scalability, and performance of the 4G/5G ecosystem for our sponsors.
  • Prototype and validate networking architectures and control algorithms to meet latency, high availability, and Quality of Experience requirements, from prototype through to operational deployment.
  • Develop and implement microservices-based network applications for real-time and near real-time use cases, such as resource management algorithms and NFV (Network Function Virtualization), and contribute to the associated engineering standards and review practices.
  • Actively participate and contribute to the design, implementation, configuration, and testing (hands-on) of features on the Core Network aspects of the full telecommunication software stack, including but not limited to the MME, SPGW, HSS, OAM, IREG, IPX, and BCE functions.
  • Work closely with MNO/MVNO partners of OQ Technology on the development, testing, and integration of roaming networks for Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Network scenarios and use cases.
  • Take on a senior technical role within a multi-disciplinary team of engineers with a wide range of skill sets, including but not limited to software development, firmware development, hardware development, and data analysis, providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, including participating in design reviews.
  • Contribute to technical research strategy, help originate and author proposals for research initiatives, and support technical benchmarking, modelling, and simulation activities.
  • Develop system performance models and support cross-functional systems engineering tasks related to system performance optimisation.
  • Participate in technical discussions with external suppliers, contractors, contracting companies, and research institutes and partners, including supporting the evaluation of supplier designs and deliverables.
  • Participate and contribute to standardisation bodies including but not limited to 3GPP, GSMA, and ITU, as part of the standardisation activities of the Organisation's Technology.
  • Prepare ESA-related documentation for project reviews and support the defence of the design at formal project reviews.
  • Support the space team with necessary inputs and feedback for the design, optimisation, and maintenance of the Operational and Demo Missions, including identification and characterisation of mission needs, expected performance, dependability and safety goals, and mission operating constraints with respect to the physical and operational environment, and develop the first issue of the functional specifications.

  • Support confirmation of compliance with applicable regulations, contribute to mission analysis, and help produce subsystem budgets (e.g. RF link budget, power budget) and specifications for the telecommunication system.
  • Support the systems engineering team to derive the requirements for the telecommunication subsystems.
  • Support the development of the operations environment.
  • Work with and support teams in OQ Subsidiaries, external partners, contractors, and research institutes.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all technology development is maintained as a key task of the role.
  • Participate in various software development activities, if required, that align with the candidate's knowledge and experience, as the Company sees fit.

Requirements

  • Master's degree (or higher) in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. A PhD is a plus.
  • Significant professional experience (typically 4+ years) in telecommunications engineering, core network (EPC/5GC), DSP, and protocol stack development.
  • Hands-on experience with 3GPP-based 4G/5G systems; experience with Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) or satellite communications is highly desirable.
  • Experience engaging with standardisation bodies (3GPP, GSMA, ITU) and managing relationships with external suppliers, MNO/MVNO partners, or research institutes.
  • Track record of taking systems from research/prototype through to operational deployment, including verification and validation in lab and field environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Core Network architecture and functions (MME, SPGW, HSS, OAM, IREG, IPX, BCE) and of NFV/microservices-based network applications.
