Backend Engineer (Java) - KYC Tech

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Engineer (Java) - KYC Tech based in India.

In this role, you will design and develop robust backend services that power critical KYC and compliance workflows. You will work with distributed systems, Java, Spring, relational and NoSQL databases, and messaging technologies at significant scale. The position combines hands-on software engineering with performance optimization, incident troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-team collaboration. Accountabilities

• Translate business and technical requirements into scalable backend services, working closely with relevant stakeholders and ensuring solutions are supported by meaningful automated tests.

• Design, develop, and maintain high-quality Java applications and distributed services using established engineering best practices.

• Build and optimize high-throughput backend systems that support secure, reliable, and seamless KYC and customer onboarding processes.

• Work with Spring Framework, MySQL, NoSQL databases, messaging middleware, and distributed system architectures to deliver resilient services.

• Proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, production incidents, reliability issues, and other technical challenges.

• Conduct performance tuning across areas such as JVM, SQL, RPC, and distributed application components where required.

• Produce and maintain clear, accurate technical documentation covering system designs, implementations, operational processes, and relevant engineering decisions.

• Collaborate with other engineering teams and cross-functional stakeholders to integrate services and deliver business-critical capabilities.

• Contribute to engineering excellence by promoting clean code, testing, maintainability, scalability, and sound software development practices.

• Share technical knowledge and mentor junior engineers, helping strengthen engineering capabilities across the team.

• Stay adaptable and effective while working with distributed colleagues across different time zones and evolving business priorities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• At least 4 years of professional experience building high-throughput, distributed applications in production environments.

• Strong proficiency in core Java and the Spring Framework.

• Solid experience with MySQL and familiarity with at least one NoSQL database.

• Strong understanding of distributed system design, scalability, reliability, and the principles behind distributed architectures.

• Experience with at least one messaging middleware technology and a good understanding of its underlying design principles.

• Experience diagnosing technical issues and optimizing application performance is highly desirable, particularly across JVM, SQL, RPC, or related layers.

• KYC, AML, compliance, fintech, or other regulated-industry experience is an advantage.

• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to learn quickly and remain effective under pressure.

• Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with remote teams across multiple time zones.

• Strong commitment to code quality, testing, technical documentation, and engineering best practices.

• A proactive mindset and willingness to take ownership of complex technical problems from investigation through resolution.
