Our UK team of creative engineers is growing, and we want to hear from you if you are interested in joining us to bring pioneering technologies from concept to reality in innovative consumer products,  and build technology demonstrations and proof of concept product prototypes. The team cover a diverse range of research topics including power electronics, sensor technology, machine learning, embedded systems and embedded software. We work closely with internal Dyson teams, external research institutions and suppliers to consider all aspects of complex products including thermal design, optics, electromagnetics, aero-acoustics, mechanical design, microbiology and compliance. We are looking for inquisitive engineers who can take ownership of technical challenges and drive solutions through to completion to develop the electronic systems for the next generation of Dyson products.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join the Power Electronics discipline of our Research team, based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.

The Senior role means you will be responsible for developing and validating efficient embedded software in at least one field of power electronics such as motor control, power conversion, battery management, etc.

You will be working within a team of multidisciplinary engineers taking new ideas to a prototype level prior to transfer to our development teams.

The role will involve:

  • Developing software for power electronic systems including motor drives, battery management systems, chargers, heater control systems and other power conversion architectures.
  • Creating and validating resource efficient embedded software on microcontrollers.
  • Responsible for an electronics software research project.
  • Researching emerging technologies through technical papers, patents, supplier engagement and collaboration with external partners.
  • Designing, simulating, building and testing demonstration rigs and prototype systems to assess the feasibility of new technologies and products.
  • Mentoring Dyson Institute students, graduate engineers and junior engineers.
  • Selecting and evaluating current and next-gen microcontrollers to optimise cost, size, efficiency and performance.
  • Creating clear technical reports and presenting design concepts, test results and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Applying a creative, structured approach to develop and assess innovative technical concepts.
  • Working with cross-functional teams to plan project activities and take responsibility for technical delivery of embedded software.
  • Identifying technical risks, proposing mitigation strategies and sharing lessons learnt to drive continuous improvement.

About You

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline, together with relevant experience in an electronics industry or research environment.
  • Experience in at least once of the following fields: motor drives, inverters, SMPS, heater control, chargers, USB power delivery, battery management systems or power transfer is desirable.
  • Experience of C/C++ programming for embedded systems is essential.
  • Experience with ARM based microcontrollers and microprocessors.
  • Experience programming in assembly / machine code desirable.
  • Experience of MCU analogue data acquisition for sampling high-speed signals.
  • Experience of using MATLAB, Python or similar tools for simulation, data acquisition and analysis.
  • Experience of agile working using Atlassian tools is desirable.
  • Experience creating verification and validation plans and executing structured testing activities.
  • Experience in the use of laboratory equipment to set up experiments and make accurate electrical measurements.
  • Experience of safe working in a laboratory environment, testing and debugging software on mains voltage and high-speed machines is desirable.
