Overview

The AtkinsRéalis Growth Markets Project Delivery Practice (PDP) is the centre of excellence for the delivery of infrastructure projects, combining the best of project management and design management to provide a full suite of services to clients in the public and private sectors. The team is responsible for delivering design services across our markets, including Water Infrastructure, Defence Infrastructure, Nuclear, Aviation, Energy, Rail stations and Urban Developments. We have an exciting vacancy within the Infrastructure PDP and are seeking an enthusiastic Engineering / Design Manager to join our Midlands, South West and Wales (MSW&W) practice, based in one of our local offices in Bristol, Cardiff or Exeter.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for a talented individual looking to take the next step in their career and take responsibility for projects from inception through to completion. You will be an established Engineering / Design Manager within the infrastructure sector, with the opportunity to develop your career and expand your experience across a wide range of exciting projects and markets. The position is likely to combine agile working from our MSW&W offices with time at client offices and project sites. Our need to recruit comes from the success of our division, strong pipeline and expected growth across the Midlands, South West and Wales regions, particularly in Nuclear, Defence, Energy and Water. A role within the Infrastructure PDP offers the opportunity to work across the full suite of projects AtkinsRéalis delivers, including refurbishment and new-build projects, nuclear new build, defence, water and many more, enabling you to demonstrate and progress your project and design management skills, knowledge and experience.

Your role

  • Be responsible for authoring and maintaining a robust Design Management Plan, drawing contributions from discipline leads in accordance with governance processes. Contribute to the production and development of the Project Execution Plan.
  • Ensure all discipline leads contribute appropriately to the production and development of the project BIM Execution Plan. Ensure an agreed platform for project collaboration is in place. Deliver the Basis of Design.
  • Ensure Technical Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes are in place. Develop, manage and track the list of deliverables. Develop simple, effective technical delivery processes to support the production of design deliverables to time, cost and quality. Ensure all key design choices and requirements are clearly captured and documented through agreed tools or forms. Work collaboratively with the Project Manager and discipline leads when communicating with client stakeholders where additional scope arises. Act as the first point of contact to coordinate the resolution of technical issues.
  • Host stakeholder meetings to ensure full involvement in the developed design process and integration of operational requirements into the design. Facilitate and close out meeting actions. Promote, motivate and mentor the multi-disciplinary design team. Provide multi-disciplinary linkage between delivery teams.
  • Ensure effective communication within the team, with proportionate use of Teams, in-person workshops and other appropriate methods. Liaise regularly with discipline leads to manage resources effectively and coordinate with the Project Manager.
  • Provide input to annual performance reviews for multi-disciplinary staff within the team. Contribute to the identification of commercial and technical risks. Ensure the scope and level of design information are executed. Agree the programme and identify key milestones and model release dates.
  • Ensure commercial arrangements are coordinated with the teams, documented and instructed. Monitor resource requirements and ensure discipline leads have access to adequate and appropriate resources to deliver the project. Ensure delivery to programme and monitor and control the budget for the designated part of the works.
  • Actively seek additional workflows to increase revenue, while working with the Project Manager to ensure contract commercial coverage and programme adjustments are agreed before work starts. Work collaboratively with the Project Manager to ensure a change control process is in place. Capture requirements and ensure assessment of technical competencies has practice sign-off.
  • Ensure multi-disciplinary compliance with the design brief and contributions towards the designated part of the works. Apply and reinforce standard designs and products across the contracted work scope. Rigorously challenge teams to drive efficiency in design programmes.
  • Convene regular cross-team technical meetings to ensure multi-disciplinary coordination and consistency of output across the project.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary technical and CDM reviews for the designated part of the works.
  • Ensure multi-disciplinary coordination of design and consistency of output. Ensure technical assurance is undertaken with the necessary discipline sign-off. Deliver design reviews internally, and to clients and project stakeholders. Maintain configuration control over the project. Review multi-disciplinary outputs from delivery teams for quality and consistency, providing sign-off within the agreed Delegation of Authority (DoA).
  • Awareness of sustainable design and Net Zero principles.

About you

  • Chartered Engineer, Architect or equivalent, with demonstrable experience managing design, build and/or operate commissions on multi-disciplinary projects. Good knowledge of the fundamental concepts, principles and theories of systems integration as applied to multi-disciplinary designs.
  • Good understanding of management processes relating to technical integration and associated analytical and investigative approaches. Infrastructure sector experience in delivering major projects. Experience with various forms of construction contract, such as NEC3 or NEC4.
  • Bring your initiative, adaptability and collaborative mindset to a role where you can work flexibly across our offices, client locations and project sites.
  • Familiar with BIM and 3D modelling tools for design and coordination purposes, including the associated information attributes managed within the model. Ability to recognise and adopt digital technologies to support the design process.
  • Customer focused with excellent client relationship management skills.
  • A hardworking and flexible individual who is a team player, demonstrates strong attention to detail, is reliable and proactive, shows initiative, and remains calm under pressure when working to demanding deadlines.
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team and demonstrate good leadership qualities.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Availability to travel across the UK and work away from home on client sites if required.
