Location: The Sutton Place Hotel, Vancouver BC Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent Department: Engineering & Facilities Reports To: Director of Rooms & General Manager

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Hotel Engineering Manager to lead the Engineering Department at our luxury hotel in Vancouver. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all hotel facilities, building systems, and guest room maintenance while delivering exceptional service that supports an outstanding guest experience.

This leadership role requires strong technical expertise, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage preventive maintenance programs, regulatory compliance, and a team of maintenance professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Facilities Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the hotel's repair and maintenance engineering department.
  • Ensure all hotel facilities, guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces are maintained to luxury hospitality standards.
  • Plans, Coordinates and implements a comprehensive preventive maintenance program.
  • Coordinate repairs for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance emergencies and operational issues
  • Troubleshoots operational problems of equipment and guest room deficiencies
  • Conducts routine room and property inspections
  • Supervises and approves all contractual work in conjunction with the General Manager
  • Performs Fire Evacuation drills as dictated by The National Fire Code of Canada
  • Prepares and submits monthly progress reports to Director of Rooms
  • All other reasonable tasks as required

Leadership & Team Management

  • Recruit, train, coach, schedule, and supervise repair and maintenance engineers.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support employee development.
  • Manage schedules to ensure adequate maintenance coverage and on call 24/7 coverage when required.
  • Holds departmental meetings with team on a monthly basis

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable municipal, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Support emergency preparedness planning and coordinate emergency response procedures as directed by Director of Security.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection logs, permits, and compliance documentation.

Financial Management

  • Monitor and manage departmental operating expenses and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Source vendors and contractors for parts and services while maintaining service quality.
  • Manage inventory of maintenance tools, equipment, and spare parts.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive maintenance leadership experience in a hotel, or hospitality environment.
  • Minimum 2 years of management or supervisory experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
  • HVAC systems
  • Plumbing
  • Electrical systems
  • Mechanical equipment
  • Fire Safety systems
  • Preventive Maintenance programs
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and building codes in British Columbia.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced hospitality environment.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency call-outs when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Power Engineering Certification (4th or 5th Class) is considered an asset.
  • Building Operator Certification is an asset.
  • First Aid Certification required
  • WHMIS certification is an asset
  • Experience working in luxury hotel properties.

Must have extensive knowledge of HVAC, building trades, mechanical-electrical equipment such as: refrigeration, kitchen equipment, laundry, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Must also have the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and operational problems, counsel, train and direct staff; create preventive maintenance programs; set priorities, meet deadlines, work under pressure and communicate verbally and in writing.

Three (3) to five (5) years property maintenance experience in a management capacity. Background should include HVAC, Building Trades, Preventive Maintenance and Energy Conservation, or a combination of technical education and experience that provides the skills required for this position.
