Java CoE Lead – Principal Engineer (FF7 — Principal Engineer)

The Group Business Solutions (GBS) division ensures the competitiveness of Euroclear by delivering reliable and sustainable IT solutions for the financial securities markets. Our technical teams deliver new IT solutions and improve existing applications for both our internal and external clients. We deploy changes into the production environment in a controlled and structured way that doesn't compromise production stability and we ensure applicative production support.

Within GBS, you will join the Solution Engineering team where you can play a key role in modernisation of the engineering practices for the IT divisions.

The Java Centre of Excellence (CoE) defines, promotes, and continuously improves the engineering standards, frameworks, and golden paths used to build backend services and business applications across Euroclear’s Java ecosystem.

The CoE provides:

  • A clear, opinionated, end-to-end way of working for Java development, covering coding standards, architecture patterns, testing, CI/CD, observability, security, release processes, and best practices across the SDLC and different platforms(Cloud, Mainframe, On premise).
  • A robust, modern, and supported Java framework, including reusable components, libraries, guidelines, platform governance, and engineering excellence standards for the Java community.

As Java CoE Lead, you will report to the Golden Path Lead and serve as the technical and strategic leader for all Java engineering capabilities at Euroclear, developing the practices at scale. You will guide the community, evolve the standards, and ensure consistent adoption across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and drive the long-term vision and roadmap for Java engineering.
  • Influence architecture and engineering decisions across multiple IT divisions.
  • Own the Java Golden Path, artifacts produced by the CoE and the community: frameworks, coding standards, reusable components, governance, and best practices.
  • Contribute hands-on to the evolution of Java frameworks and platform capabilities.

Engineering Excellence

  • Champion engineering excellence through continuous improvement and technical mastery.
  • Ensure the Java stack is modern, secure, scalable, and compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Promote consistent development practices across teams and regions.
  • Drive adoption of the Java stack and monitor adoption KPIs.

Product Ownership

  • Own and deliver the Java CoE product roadmap (platforms, tooling, lifecycle management, governance services, training).
  • Prioritise backlog, manage dependencies, and ensure alignment with Euroclear’s technology strategy.
  • Define KPIs, success measures, and value realisation for Java assets and integration capabilities.

Community & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead and grow the Java engineering community.
  • Collaborate with architects, Product Owners, SRE, Testing, Cloud, and Security teams.
  • Federate stakeholders across IT domains (architecture, testing, CI/CD, cloud, SRE, security, etc.) to ensure alignment and adoption.

Delivery & Value Realisation

  • Manage a complex CoE backlog covering framework evolution, modernization topics, tooling, and platform improvements.
  • Prioritise initiatives to maximise engineering efficiency and value delivered.
  • Demonstrate measurable impact of CoE deliverables.

People Leadership

  • Provide coaching to Java CoE members.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and technical mastery.

Profile

Required Experience & Skills

  • Extensive experience in IT delivery using agile methodologies.
  • Strong knowledge of Agile values and principles (Scrum Master certification is a plus).
  • Proven leadership and ability to influence across functions and divisions.
  • Excellent analytical, organisational, and prioritisation skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage senior stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ease working with Business, IT, Security, Risk, Legal, Finance, etc.
  • Fluent English.

Technical Expertise

  • Deep hands-on experience in Java backend engineering, including:
  • Java, Spring/Spring Boot
  • API design, microservices, Event Driven Architecture
  • CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability, performance engineering
  • Secure coding practices and platform governance
  • Experience of deploying and running Java on IBM Z-Series Mainframe is a plus
