Staff SRE, FinOps

*** 100% Remote — Costa Rica (optional office access in San José)

Sumo Logic's FinOps team makes every dollar of cloud and AI spend visible, attributable and optimizable. As a Staff SRE, you'll apply SRE principles (measurement, observability, automation and accountability) to FinOps and cost optimization, treating cost the way SREs treat reliability. That means building the financial models behind our cost decisions: forecasting spend, modeling unit economics and COGS, and planning our commitment strategy. Working as the quantitative partner to Engineering, Finance (FP&A) and executive leadership, you'll turn those models into decisions.

This is a quantitative role. We're looking for someone who is genuinely comfortable with math, especially financial and statistical modeling. You will build forecasts, sensitivity analyses, and optimization models. You will draw insights from models and datasets, and must be able to defend the assumptions behind them when presenting to stakeholders.

What you will do:

FinOps & Financial modeling

  • Build financial models for cloud and AI cost, including unit economics, COGS, and spend forecasts with scenario and sensitivity analysis.
  • Shape our commitment strategy (CSP, RI, EDP) by modeling the tradeoff between savings and utilization risk.
  • Design cost allocation and attribution methods so every dollar of cloud and AI spend maps to the team and product that drives it.
  • Own and evolve our cost regression program and tooling, detecting, investigating and driving resolution of cost increases, so engineering teams have visibility into their spend and are accountable for it.
  • Help shape and drive the cost optimization roadmap, leading cost-saving initiatives across teams and acting as the bridge between engineering, finance and executive leadership.
  • Drive continuous improvement and operational excellence for our FinOps pipelines and tools.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.

Applying SRE principles to FinOps

  • Run FinOps tooling and cost data pipelines like production services, with monitoring, alerting, data-quality checks and automation.
  • Bring SRE practices to cost management: budgets and thresholds modeled on error budgets, actionable cost alerting, and blameless reviews of significant cost regressions.
  • Quantify cost-reliability tradeoffs, such as the cost of redundancy vs. the cost of downtime, so optimization decisions don't put customer experience at risk.
  • Automate manual cost reporting and analysis work.
  • Contribute cost insights to the weekly LiveSite operational review.

What you already have

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Sciences, Engineering, Finance or related field (Ph.D. is a plus)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights
  • Track record of taking ownership and influencing results, working across internal and external organizations, including engineering, finance and marketing.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Technical skills:
  • 7+ years of professional experience in data or software engineering roles
  • 2+ years of experience with cloud financial management or FinOps framework
  • Demonstrative ability to build and operate data pipelines with complex sources
  • Experience partnering with Finance/FP&A on budgeting, forecasting or gross-margin analysis.
  • Operational expertise in high scale, reliable 24/7, multi-tenant global SaaS
  • Strong coding and debugging skills
  • Experience with Scala, Java, Golang, or Python (Scala experience highly beneficial).
