Full description

The purpose of the Assistant Project Manager role is to support the successful delivery of Group Metropolitan’s mechanical projects from pre-construction through to completion and handover. Working closely with the Project Manager and wider project team, the role will assist with the coordination of site activities, subcontractors, suppliers, programme, quality, health & safety and commercial requirements. The Assistant Project Manager will take responsibility for defined elements of project delivery, helping to ensure works are planned, coordinated and completed safely, efficiently and to the high standards expected by Group Metropolitan and our clients. The role also provides an opportunity to develop practical project management experience and technical knowledge, with increasing levels of responsibility as competence and experience develop.

  • Previous experience within an Assistant Project Manager, Project Engineer, Site Management or similar project delivery role within the mechanical/building services sector.
  • Practical knowledge of mechanical building services and infrastructure, ideally within critical environments, commercial fit-out or data centre projects.
  • Good understanding of the construction project lifecycle, from pre-construction and mobilisation through to commissioning, handover and close-out.
  • Working knowledge of health & safety requirements within a construction environment.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, specifications, programmes and other project documentation.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors, suppliers and site-based activities.
  • Good commercial awareness, with an understanding of project costs, variations and budget tracking.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to build effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, subcontractors and the wider supply chain.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office and comfortable using construction/project management systems and software.
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving, with the confidence to identify and escalate project risks or issues where required.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider project team.
  • Willingness to travel to Group Metropolitan project locations and client sites as required.
  • Relevant construction or building services qualification desirable but not essential, with consideration given to candidates who can demonstrate suitable practical experience.
  • Relevant site-based certifications, such as CSCS and SSSTS/SMSTS.
  • Promote Group Metropolitan’s Rules and contribute to establishing and maintaining a safe working culture and practices.
  • Comply with Group Metropolitan’s procedures, policies and all applicable legal obligations.
  • Promote and comply with environmental requirements and good practice.
  • Support the delivery and quality of works in line with client and Group Metropolitan expectations.
  • Coordinate site activities and the wider project team, including subcontractors, trades and the external supply chain.
  • Implement and maintain appropriate quality assurance methods and standards to support the successful delivery of projects.
  • Maintain HSQE procedures from pre-construction through to project completion, ensuring compliance with Group Metropolitan standards, policies, processes, ISO accreditations and applicable legislative requirements.
  • Prepare weekly site condition and safety reports, taking prompt action to address and escalate any areas requiring attention.
  • Ensure programmes, plans, method statements and risk assessments are robust, up to date, understood and effectively implemented.
  • Develop an understanding of relevant contract terms and ensure project activities are carried out in accordance with these requirements.
  • Ensure all site records are maintained and kept up to date in line with Group Metropolitan requirements and applicable legislation.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders, including clients, subcontractors and the supply chain.
  • Identify and act upon opportunities to reduce costs and add value to the project.
  • Identify and escalate potential project issues in a timely manner.
  • Support the maintenance of the high site standards established at the start of the project throughout its lifecycle.
  • Ensure all individuals working on site have the appropriate competence, training and authorisation for the activities they are undertaking.
  • Participate in, contribute to and, where required, chair and minute meetings with subcontractors.
  • Ensure testing documentation and other relevant project records are completed accurately and maintained appropriately.
  • Carry out site surveys to establish scopes of work for costing purposes.
  • Develop a working understanding of project costing, including the preparation of smaller variations and minor works.
  • Develop an understanding of cost tracking to support the delivery of projects within agreed budget allowances.
