The availability, accessibility and use of reliable and timely gender data and statistics are critical for monitoring progress towards gender equality and women's empowerment, identifying inequalities and emerging trends, and informing evidence-based policies and programmes. UN Women works to strengthen the production, dissemination and use of gender statistics and to address persistent gender data gaps.

The UN Women Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (ECA RO) supports country offices and national partners in strengthening gender data and statistics, promotes greater availability and use of gender data for policy and advocacy, and develops regional and country-level analysis on key gender equality issues. This includes compiling and maintaining country and regional gender data, monitoring trends and data gaps, supporting the development of analytical and knowledge products, and strengthening the visualization and communication of gender statistics.

To support the implementation of the regional gender data and statistics portfolio, UN Women ECA RO is seeking a Data Analyst Intern. The intern will provide analytical and data management support, including compiling and updating data from multiple sources, processing and analyzing gender statistics, developing data visualizations, and supporting thematic analyses on priority gender equality issues.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Regional Gender Statistics Specialist of UN Women ECA Regional Office (ECA RO), the intern will support the implementation of the regional gender data and statistics portfolio. his includes the following:

  • Support the compilation, processing and organization of gender-related data and indicators from a range of national, regional and international data sources, including official statistics, household surveys, administrative data and international statistical databases.
  • Support the regular updating and maintenance of country and regional gender datasets, ensuring that the most recent available data are systematically incorporated and appropriately documented.
  • Conduct basic data cleaning, validation and consistency checks, including reviewing data sources, reference years, definitions, units of measurement, disaggregation and other relevant metadata, and flagging potential data gaps or inconsistencies.
  • Conduct descriptive statistical analysis and analysis of trends and patterns on topics related to GEWE, including comparative and time-series analysis, where data availability permits.
  • Prepare charts, tables and other data visualizations for inclusion in regional and country-level reports, gender data profiles, analytical briefs, presentations and other knowledge products.
  • Support the preparation of data and analytical inputs in response to ad hoc requests from UN Women ECA RO, country offices and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Additional support to the Regional Gender Statistics Specialist as needed.

Functional Competencies:

Experience and skills:

  • Strong computer skills with the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point are required.

  • Knowledge of basic statistical methods, descriptive analysis, trend analysis and data visualization is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce complex charts, tables and other visual representations of quantitative data is required.
  • Experience in conducting comparative/multi-country analysis and generating analytical reports, using quantitative and qualitative methods, would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Power BI, including the development of data visualizations and/or dashboards, would be a strong asset.

Education:

  • The intern should be pursuing academic studies in gender studies, statistics, demography, social sciences with a strong quantitative component or other similar subject at post graduate level.
  • Be enrolled in a post graduate school programme (second university degree, or equivalent, or higher)
  • Academic coursework or research related to quantitative research methods statistics, statistics, data science, gender equality study would be a strong asset.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required.
  • Knowledge of Russian would be an asset.
  • Experience in organizing events and/or training would be an asset.

Conditions:

  • UN Women will pay stipend for the internship; all other expenses connected with it will be borne by the intern;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The Intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan;
  • The Intern will not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of my internship or for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof;

• The Intern will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

Once the candidate has been selected, the following additional documents need to be submitted:

  • Letter of enrolment from school or proof of (Master’s programme) graduation if within less than one year;
  • Scanned visa document/scanned passport document if no visa is required;
  • Scanned medical insurance document.
