Senior Java Software Developer

We are looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development of mission-critical identification and biometric solutions used in large-scale national and international environments.

In this role, you will work on highly available, distributed systems supporting civil and criminal identification processes. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary and international teams to develop, integrate, and evolve advanced biometric and identity management platforms, ensuring high standards of security, reliability, and performance.

The role combines backend development, distributed systems engineering, and system integration expertise, with a strong focus on Java, microservices, and biometric identification technologies.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend applications using: • Java

• Spring Boot

• Design and implement: • Microservices

• REST APIs

• System integrations

• Participate in the development and integration of civil and criminal identification solutions

• Collaborate on biometric identification projects and integrations with: • AFIS

• ABIS

• Related identification platforms

• Develop and support distributed and highly available systems

• Ensure the: • Security

• Performance

• Reliability

• Maintainability

of production solutions

• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in critical production environments

• Collaborate with international teams and partners across multiple geographies

• Contribute to the continuous improvement of: • Software architectures

• Engineering processes

• Development best practices

Requirements

• Portuguese citizenship

• 3+ years of professional experience in Java development

• Strong experience with: • Spring Boot

• Spring Framework

• Solid knowledge of: • Microservices architectures

• REST API development

• Experience with messaging technologies such as: • Kafka

• RabbitMQ

• Knowledge of: • SQL databases

• NoSQL databases

• Hands-on experience with: • Docker

• Kubernetes

• CI/CD pipelines

• Experience working with: • Distributed systems

• High-availability applications

• Production-critical environments

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

• Ability to work autonomously in technically demanding environments

• Experience collaborating in multidisciplinary and international teams

• Fluency in English

Nice-to-have

• Experience integrating systems within Public Administration environments, particularly: • Justice sector platforms

• Knowledge of: • Biometric identification technologies

• AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems)

• ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification Systems)

• Familiarity with international standards and organizations such as: • NIST

• INTERPOL

• EURODAC

• eu-LISA

• Experience working on national identity, border control, law enforcement, or biometric solutions

• Experience participating in international technology projects
