What they look for
Requirements
Candidates must possess deep full-stack or backend engineering expertise with a proven track record in leading technical teams and operating distributed systems at scale. Proficiency in modern cloud-native practices, CI/CD, and a 'you build it, you own it' mindset is essential for success in this role.
Full description
- We're leading a home lending engineering transformation.
- You have full-stack leadership across React, Node and cloud.
- Together we simplify home ownership with AI-powered tech.
Do work that matters:
As a Engineering Manager in the Apply With Ease Crew, you'll be a hands-on engineering leader who spends your time where it matters most: solving complex technical problems, building software and leading a small squad of talented engineers. This is not a delivery management role. You'll be actively involved in full-stack, full-cycle software development, contributing to architecture, writing production code, reviewing pull requests, improving platform reliability and helping your team ship high-quality solutions from idea to production. Working closely with Product and Design, you'll lead a squad of 3-5 engineers to create secure, scalable and intuitive home lending experiences that make applying for a home loan simpler and faster for our customers.
You'll combine technical leadership with people leadership, coaching engineers while remaining deeply connected to the technology and outcomes your squad delivers. Owning the entire software lifecycle, you'll help shape technical strategy, champion modern engineering practices, drive AI-powered development and automation, and ensure your team builds, runs and continuously improves the products they own. Your impact will extend beyond your squad as you help uplift engineering standards across Home Buying, influence technical direction and contribute to one of CommBank's most important customer journeys while continuing to grow as an accomplished software engineering leader.
See yourself in our team:
The Apply With Ease Crew sits at the heart of CommBank’s Home Buying Domain, building the digital platforms and services that power one of Australia’s most important customer journeys, securing a home loan. Our technology enables customers, lenders and associates to seamlessly progress from application through to approval, removing complexity, reducing friction and helping customers achieve home ownership faster. Working at scale, we design and operate secure, cloud-native, API-driven solutions that handle millions of customer interactions while maintaining the highest standards of reliability, performance and security. As part of a highly collaborative crew of engineers, product specialists and designers, you'll tackle complex challenges across customer experience, automation, decisioning and platform modernisation. We embrace modern engineering practices, AI-powered development, automation and continuous delivery to accelerate innovation and improve outcomes. Every improvement we deliver has a direct and measurable impact on customers, creating simpler experiences, faster decisions and a more intuitive path to home ownership.
We’re interested in hearing from people who:
- Have deep full-stack and/or backend engineering expertise with the technical credibility to lead architecture, design and delivery of secure, scalable customer platforms.
- Lead a small team of engineers while remaining hands-on with coding, architecture and engineering delivery, fostering a culture of ownership, technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Own outcomes end-to-end, partnering with Product and Design to solve customer problems from discovery through to production.
- Champion full-cycle engineering with a "you build it, you own it" mindset, driving accountability for reliability, observability, security and operational excellence.
- Bring proven experience designing and operating distributed systems, APIs and cloud-native platforms at scale.
- Drive modern engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing, DevOps and cloud engineering to enable safe, frequent delivery.
- Influence engineering strategy, architecture, standards and capability uplift across teams and the broader engineering community.
- Make pragmatic technical decisions that balance delivery speed, engineering quality, security, risk and long-term platform sustainability.
- Are passionate about AI-Powered Engineering, automation and developer experience, using modern tools and practices to improve productivity, quality and delivery outcomes.
