Position details
The Senior Middleware Operations & SRE Engineer is responsible for the strategic engineering, operational management, and continuous improvement of the Bank's middleware platforms across the APAC region. The role provides technical leadership for enterprise middleware technologies, ensuring secure, resilient, scalable, and highly available platforms that support critical business applications and services.
The incumbent will drive platform standardization, automation, operational excellence, and service reliability while ensuring compliance with MUFG's technology, cybersecurity, risk, and regulatory requirements. Working closely with application teams, infrastructure engineering, security, architecture, and regional technology stakeholders, the role will lead the design, implementation, and support of modern middleware platforms, including containerized and cloud-enabled environments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Middleware Platform Engineering & Architecture
- Lead the architecture, design, implementation, and lifecycle management of enterprise middleware platforms, including:
- Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP)
- IBM MQ (WMQ)
- OpenShift Container Platform
- Related middleware and integration technologies
- Define and maintain middleware reference architectures, standards, and roadmaps aligned with enterprise architecture principles.
- Design secure, scalable, resilient, and high-performing middleware solutions supporting critical banking services.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend platform enhancements that improve reliability, operational efficiency, and business agility.
- Develop and maintain architecture documentation, technical standards, operational procedures, and knowledge repositories.
- Support modernization initiatives including containerization, cloud adoption, platform automation, and infrastructure transformation programs.
2. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) & Operational Excellence
- Drive SRE practices focused on platform reliability, observability, availability, and service resiliency.
- Define and monitor Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and operational health metrics.
- Establish proactive monitoring, alerting, event correlation, and performance analytics frameworks.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) activities and ensure effective remediation of recurring incidents and operational risks.
- Implement automation and self-healing capabilities to improve system reliability and reduce operational overhead.
- Support continuous service improvement initiatives through reliability engineering and operational analytics.
3. Middleware Operations & Service Management
- Manage day-to-day operations of middleware platforms across Development, UAT, DR, and Production environments.
- Oversee middleware deployments, upgrades, migrations, capacity expansion, and platform refresh activities.
- Ensure platform stability through proactive monitoring, performance management, and operational governance.
- Lead incident, problem, and change management activities in accordance with ITIL and organizational standards.
- Partner with application support, infrastructure, network, database, and security teams to resolve complex technical issues.
- Ensure operational readiness and supportability of new platform deployments and technology initiatives.
4. Performance Engineering & Capacity Management
- Lead performance tuning and optimization initiatives across middleware environments.
- Analyze application and messaging workloads to identify bottlenecks and optimize throughput, latency, and resource utilization.
- Perform trend analysis and forecasting to support capacity planning and infrastructure scalability.
- Establish performance benchmarks and operational standards for middleware platforms.
- Support business growth initiatives by ensuring middleware environments scale effectively to meet demand.
5. Cybersecurity, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure middleware platforms comply with MUFG Cyber Security Standards, Technology Controls, and Regulatory Requirements.
- Implement secure-by-design principles including:
- Authentication and Authorization Controls
- Encryption and Key Management
- TLS/SSL Configuration Standards
- Secure Communication Frameworks
- Support vulnerability management, remediation activities, penetration testing, and security assessments.
- Participate in audits, regulatory reviews, and risk assessments across regional entities.
- Maintain evidence and documentation required for internal, external, and regulatory audits.
- Drive operational resilience initiatives including disaster recovery, failover testing, and cyber resilience programs.
6. Platform Automation & DevOps
- Promote Infrastructure as Code (IaC), configuration management, and automated deployment practices.
- Integrate middleware platforms with enterprise DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts and tooling using technologies such as:
- Shell Scripting
- Python
- Ansible
- OpenShift Automation
- Improve deployment consistency, operational efficiency, and platform governance through automation.
- Collaborate with application development teams to adopt DevSecOps best practices.
7. Stakeholder Management & Project Delivery
- Lead assigned middleware-related initiatives and strategic projects across APAC.
- Collaborate with enterprise architects, application owners, project managers, and business stakeholders to deliver technology solutions.
- Provide technical guidance during project planning, design reviews, risk assessments, and implementation activities.
- Support technology transformation programs and operational improvement initiatives.
- Prepare management reports, platform health dashboards, risk updates, and performance metrics for leadership review.
8. Leadership & People Development
- Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise within the Middleware and Infrastructure Platforms teams.
- Mentor and coach junior engineers to build technical capability and operational excellence.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, innovation, and accountability.
- Contribute to team development, succession planning, and capability-building initiatives.
- Act as an escalation point for complex technical, operational, and project-related matters.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Extensive experience as a Middleware Engineer and/or Architect.
- 10+ years of experience in middleware technologies, with a focus on JBoss, WebSphere Application Server and Message Queuing (MQ) systems such as IBM WMQ, ActiveMQ, or similar platforms.
- Expert-level experience with WAS, including installation, configuration, tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Extensive experience with Message Queue technologies (e.g., IBM MQ, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ) and integration with enterprise applications.
- Strong understanding of middleware security, including SSL/TLS, encryption, authentication, and authorization best practices.
- In-depth knowledge of middleware technologies and enterprise architecture principles.
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift) for middleware deployment and management is added advantage.
- Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Shell, Python) for automation.
- Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for automated middleware deployment and monitoring.
- Familiarity with operating systems, both Linux and Windows, and networking concepts.
- Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex issues related to performance, connectivity, and security.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Proven leadership and project management abilities.
- Ability to architect and design middleware solutions.
