Role Overview
We are now looking to grow our User Centred Design team and are recruiting for a Senior User Researcher.
The Senior User Researcher will lead the user research programme across complex public sector engagements, embedded within multidisciplinary Agile teams alongside service designers, interaction designers, software engineers and product managers.
Operating at SFIA Level 5, this role requires an experienced practitioner who can independently plan and lead user research activities across larger teams and complex service domains throughout all delivery phases (Discovery, Alpha, Beta and Live).
You will translate user evidence into strategic decisions, advocate for inclusive and accessible public services at a senior level, and play a pivotal role in client advisory and consulting engagement delivery.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead, scope and deliver user research across complex services and multi-team environments, defining research strategies across Discovery, Alpha, Beta and Live phases.
• Advise teams and clients on the selection, application and ethical safeguarding of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative user research methods.
• Lead collaborative data analysis and synthesis, engaging colleagues and stakeholders to build user empathy and align on core service opportunities.
• Champion inclusive research practices across projects, ensuring research actively involves diverse user groups, users with accessibility needs and users requiring assisted digital support.
• Assure research quality, ethical rigour and alignment with WCAG standards and the GDS Service Standard, ensuring services are ready for formal service assessments.
• Translate user research insights into high-impact findings, presented via regular playbacks and Show & Tells, which directly influence sprint backlogs and project decisions.
• Present compelling, evidence-backed narratives to senior stakeholders to build consensus on project decisions.
• Ensure research complies with GDPR, data privacy regulations, informed consent protocols and Market Research Society (MRS) ethics guidelines.
• Mentor, coach and support the development of associate and mid-level user researchers to elevate research maturity across the team.
• Build strong, trusted relationships with client teams, represent Scrumconnect values, support consulting proposals and pre-sales activity, and actively contribute to our internal UCD Community of Practice.
Essential Skills & Experience
• Significant experience as a Senior User Researcher leading research within UK public sector or government digital services.
• Track record of designing and running qualitative and quantitative research programmes across complex stakeholder landscapes.
• Proven experience with service assessments.
• Expertise in research ethics, data protection and GDPR compliance within research settings.
• Proficiency with digital research analysis and repository platforms (e.g. Dovetail, Optimal Workshop and Miro).
• Exceptional communication and narrative-building skills to influence senior stakeholders and decision-makers.
Desirable Skills & Experience
• Experience leading user research in regulatory, local government or policy-heavy contexts.
• Understanding of service architecture, technical constraints and data flows.
• Government Social Research (GSR), MRS accreditation or an equivalent professional qualification.
