About the Role

We are looking for a product-focused data scientist and developer to join CREW’s Platform Team. This person designs and implements data products to enable other CREW teams and to expand the capabilities of CREW’s intelligence platform. These data products can range from constructing bespoke data transformations or models to extract deeper insights from wastewater data, to developing dashboards or other tooling to facilitate access and engagement with these insights.

This role blends data expertise and production code-writing abilities with cross-functional communication excellence: effective specification gathering from key stakeholders, skillful translation of specifications to appropriate product designs that assure real needs are being met, thoughtful and defensible production-grade implementation of data approaches, and stewardship of cyclical processes of feedback and iteration.

The ideal candidate is a strong data professional who can not only engage with scientists, engineers, and non-technical colleagues to develop a useful dashboard, visualization, or model, but who can also maximize the impact of the resultant data product via stakeholder education and feedback-driven iteration.

Key Responsibilities

Design Data Products

  • Drive discussion with stakeholders to establish a clear articulation of the problem to be solved, whether it be a problem of commercial strategy or wastewater process.
  • Craft a proposed solution that specifically addresses the identified problem.
  • Be the authority on what flavor of data product would be most appropriate and impactful as the solution, deeply informed by the domain expertise of your colleagues.

Implement Data Products

  • Develop visualizations, dashboards, tools, and models to improve company-wide access to and understanding of wastewater process data by writing production-quality code and employing coding best practices.
  • Contribute to the extension and maintenance of CREW’s intelligence platform codebase.

Be a Steward of the Intelligence Platform

  • Educate colleagues on effective use and engagement with data products.
  • Collect feedback and iterate on data products to maximize utility and impact.
  • Unearth data-related problems and platform-capability potential through deep-listening and thoughtful dialog with colleagues, and take initiative to elevate and galvanize efforts to address.

Experience Requirements

  • 4+ years experience as a collaborative data professional (data scientist, data analyst, data engineer).
  • Academic and professional background that pairs data or computer science with environmental or natural science.
  • Python proficiency, especially with scientific (numpy, pandas), machine learning (scikit-learn, pytorch), and visualization (matplotlib, seaborn, plotly) libraries.
  • Experience building for non-technical stakeholders and designing thoughtful data visualizations.
  • Comfortable collecting requirements and iterating based on feedback.
  • Clear communication and documentation habits.
  • Preferred, but not required experiences: MRV, wastewater modeling, process-based modeling, geospatial data analysis & modeling, physics-informed machine learning.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, early-stage, or evolving company environment.
  • You practice extreme ownership (no task is too small).
  • You love being in the trenches with your team and working with high empathy.
  • You have a growth mindset.

Compensation

Compensation at the time of offer is unique to each candidate and based on a variety of factors such as skill set, experience, qualifications, and work location. Salary is one part of the total compensation and benefits package. Other benefits for eligible employees may include: equity through the form of option grants, flexible paid time off, 401(k) plan, well equipped office environment, and health benefits offerings.

The expected base salary range for this role is $90,000 – $120,000. This range represents the company’s estimate for this position at the time of posting however actual compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, role scope, and business needs.
