The Product Designer (UI/UX) designs intuitive, efficient and visually engaging experiences across Ocean Software's product suite.
Working within cross-functional Agile teams, the Product Designer translates customer, business and technical requirements into user-centered designs that are practical, scalable, and aligned to customer needs. The role combines UX thinking with strong UI execution to deliver high-quality software experiences from concept through to implementation.
The Product Designer works collaboratively with Product Managers, Business Analysts, Developers and customers to shape intuitive, accessible and effective product experiences. They apply contemporary human-centred and inclusive design practices across discovery, problem framing, interaction and interface design, prototyping and validation. They also strengthen Ocean’s Product Design discipline through critique, facilitation, design system evolution and shared ways of working.
The Product Designer works closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, Developers and customers to improve usability, streamline workflows, and support strong customer outcomes. This role suits a designer who enjoys solving complex problems, creating polished interfaces, and delivering software used in mission-critical environments. Essential
- 3–5 years’ experience in Product Design, UX Design, UI Design or a similar role.
- Demonstrated experience designing digital software products.
- A strong portfolio showcasing problem framing, user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, high-fidelity UI designs and shipped outcomes.
- Proficiency in Figma and modern design and prototyping tools.
- Experience facilitating design workshops, reviews, discovery or validation sessions.
- Strong understanding of usability, accessibility and interaction design principles.
- Experience working within Agile software delivery teams.
- Clear communication, collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes.
Desirable
- Experience designing enterprise software or SaaS platforms.
- Experience in defence, aviation, emergency services or another regulated industry.
- Experience contributing to design systems and component libraries.
- Familiarity with customer research and usability testing activities.
- Understanding of accessibility standards and best-practice design principles.
- Interest in adopting emerging design technologies and AI-assisted workflows as tools become available.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance.

User Experience & Product Design
- Help frame problems, clarify user needs and define design opportunities before progressing to solutions.

- Identify opportunities to simplify complex workflows.
- Participate in customer discovery, validation and usability testing activities.
- Incorporate customer and stakeholder feedback into iterative design improvements.
User Interface Design
- Produce high-fidelity interface designs and polished visual concepts using approved design tools.
- Create accessible, responsive and visually consistent user interfaces.
- Develop and maintain reusable design patterns and components.
- Ensure design quality and consistency across Ocean’s product portfolio.
- Prepare design specifications and assets for Engineering teams.
Facilitation, Collaboration & Delivery
- Plan and facilitate design workshops, design reviews, discovery activities and validation sessions where appropriate.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Business Analysts and Developers, customers and other Product Designers throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Participate in Agile planning, refinement, reviews and retrospectives.
- Clearly communicate design rationale and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Balance customer needs, business outcomes and technical constraints when developing solutions.
- Work with Engineering teams to ensure designs are implemented accurately and effectively.
- Respond to BAU design questions and support feature enhancements, defects and workflow improvements.
Design Systems & Continuous Improvement
- Work closely with Product team through design reviews, shared workflows and peer feedback.
- Promote and apply contemporary Product Design methods, including human-centred design, discovery, problem framing, iterative design, prototyping and validation.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of Ocean’s design system and component libraries.
- Support accessibility, consistency and quality standards across products.
- Stay informed on emerging design trends, tools and technologies, including AI-assisted workflows, and adopt them where appropriate and available.
- Identify opportunities to improve design processes, product quality and delivery efficiency.
