Full description

Petal is a leading Canadian healthcare orchestration and billing company that revolutionizes healthcare systems to make them agile, efficient, and resilient by enabling the forecasting and shaping of world-class healthcare through Healthcare BI, advanced analytics, and informed insights.

The Platform Services division owns and develops shared application services and platform capabilities that are used across all of Petal's SaaS products. These reusable services provide the foundation for building scalable, secure, and consistent product experiences across the Petal platform.

Your daily life

As an Architect, you will shape the technical direction of your product area by designing scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions that enable your delivery team to build with confidence. Working primarily in a "Sprint 0" mode, you'll stay ahead of development by defining architecture, documenting technical decisions, and preparing the technical foundation for upcoming work.

You'll collaborate closely with Product Management, Design, and the Development Manager from early discovery through delivery, ensuring solutions are technically sound, aligned with business goals, and achievable within the team's capacity. Throughout implementation, you'll support engineers by resolving architectural challenges, validating design decisions, and helping the team navigate complex technical problems.

You will also work closely with other Architects and Principal Developers to ensure your solutions integrate seamlessly with the broader Petal platform. By establishing technical standards, managing architectural debt, mentoring Technical Leads, and continuously improving engineering practices, you'll help build a modern, scalable platform that supports all of Petal's SaaS products.

Your profile

You are a hands-on Software Architect who thrives on building platform-first capabilities that enable engineering teams to deliver products faster, more securely, and at scale. You combine deep technical expertise with a product mindset, understanding that the best platforms abstract complexity, promote self-service, and accelerate developer productivity. You are passionate about modern cloud architectures, AI-powered software development, and creating reusable services that power multiple products across the organization.

The sky's the limit if you have:

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture, with a proven track record of designing and delivering enterprise-scale distributed systems.
  • A platform-first mindset, with experience designing shared services, reusable APIs, developer platforms, and internal products that are adopted across multiple engineering teams.
  • An AI-native approach to software engineering, leveraging AI-powered development tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, documentation, architecture, and delivery. You stay current with emerging AI capabilities and continuously explore how they can transform software development.
  • Expert-level system design skills with experience building resilient, scalable, secure, and highly available cloud-native applications and distributed systems.
  • Strong understanding of API-first design, event-driven architectures, microservices, integration patterns, and modern application platforms.
  • Hands-on technical capability, comfortable building proof-of-concepts, reviewing code, validating architectural decisions, and helping teams solve complex technical challenges.
  • Deep expertise in Microsoft Azure, including cloud-native application architecture, networking, security, identity, observability, and platform services.
  • Strong experience with Identity and Access Management (IAM), including modern authentication and authorization patterns (OAuth2, OpenID Connect, SAML, RBAC/ABAC/ReBAC), identity providers, and secure application design.
  • Experience working closely with Product Managers, Designers, Development Managers, and Technical Leads to shape technical solutions from discovery through production.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts, architectural trade-offs, and long-term technology strategy to both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, architecture governance, security best practices, and technical roadmaps while balancing innovation with operational excellence.
  • A collaborative leadership style that mentors engineers, influences through technical expertise, and fosters a culture of continuous learning, engineering excellence, and platform thinking.
  • Strong DevOps and engineering productivity experience, including CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, observability, automation, developer experience, and modern software delivery practices.
