About The Role

The Engineering Lead – Data & DevOps is responsible for leading the delivery, operation and continual evolution of data, platform engineering and DevSecOps capabilities across the Equities Trading Technology domain.

The role combines people leadership, technical leadership and platform ownership to establish scalable engineering practices, resilient data services, modern deployment pipelines and operational excellence across the ASX Trade ecosystem. The Engineering Lead acts as a force multiplier for engineering teams by creating reusable capabilities, improving developer experience, enabling automation-first delivery and ensuring compliance with ASX's regulatory, security and operational resilience obligations.

This role operates as a senior technology leader within Markets Technology, partnering closely with Product, Architecture, Cyber Security, Production Assurance, Delivery and Operations teams to deliver trusted, secure and highly resilient market infrastructure.

What You'll Do

Engineering Leadership

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of Data, Platform and DevOps engineers.
  • Create an environment that promotes accountability, collaboration, learning and engineering excellence.
  • Establish engineering standards, practices and technical roadmaps.
  • Support workforce planning, recruitment, succession planning and capability uplift.
  • Foster a culture of automation, experimentation and continuous improvement.

Data Platform Engineering

  • Guide the design and implementation of data pipelines, streaming integrations and data products supporting ASX Trade and downstream consumers.
  • Promote standardised patterns for ingestion, transformation, quality, governance and distribution of data assets.
  • Ensure data services are secure, discoverable, observable and operationally supportable.
  • Partner with enterprise data platform teams to maximise reuse of common platform capabilities.

DevOps & Platform Engineering

  • Establish and evolve CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code and platform engineering capabilities.
  • Drive automation of deployment, testing, security controls and operational workflows.
  • Improve engineering productivity through standardised tooling, reusable frameworks and paved-road platform services.
  • Support cloud and on-premises engineering environments.

Operational Excellence & Resilience

  • Ensure platforms meet ASX requirements for availability, recoverability, observability, security and performance.
  • Define and monitor service level objectives and operational health indicators.
  • Lead post-incident reviews and drive preventative improvements.
  • Embed SRE principles, reliability engineering and resilience-by-design practices.

Architecture & Technology Strategy

  • Contribute to domain technology strategy and target-state architecture.
  • Ensure alignment with enterprise engineering, cyber, cloud and data strategies.
  • Evaluate new technologies and engineering practices to improve delivery outcomes.
  • Champion modern engineering approaches, including automation, observability, platform engineering and AI-assisted development where appropriate.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build trusted relationships across Markets Technology and enterprise functions.
  • Partner with Product Owners, Architects, Delivery Leads, Production Assurance and Risk stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Influence domain-wide engineering decisions through technical credibility and leadership.

Accountabilities

Experience & Qualifications

Must Have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or related discipline.
  • 10+ years experience in software engineering, platform engineering, DevOps, SRE or data engineering roles.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and developing technical talent.
  • Experience operating highly available and resilient technology platforms.
  • Strong understanding of DevSecOps, CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code practices.
  • Experience with cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.

Technical Expertise

Strong knowledge across:

  • Data engineering and streaming platforms.
  • CI/CD tooling and automation.
  • Infrastructure as Code.
  • Cloud-native architectures.
  • Kubernetes and container platforms.
  • Observability and telemetry platforms.
  • API and event-driven integration patterns.
  • Linux platforms and automation tooling.
  • Secure software development lifecycle practices.

Desirable

  • Experience within financial markets, exchanges or critical infrastructure environments.
  • AWS, Azure or GCP certifications.
  • Experience establishing Platform Engineering or SRE operating models.
  • Regulatory or operational risk experience.
