Full description

At Atom Computing, we build quantum computers using arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms that will empower customers to achieve unprecedented computational breakthroughs. Join a team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals advancing the state of the art in quantum computing.

We are seeking a Quantum Operations Manager to lead the onsite team responsible for commissioning, operating, and maintaining a commercial neutral-atom quantum computer in Copenhagen. Reporting to the Director of Commercial Quantum Systems, you will manage a team of four engineers and oversee the technical work required to deliver reliable system performance.

This is a hands-on technical leadership position requiring expertise in complex experimental systems, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to lead engineers in an operational environment. You will work closely with Atom's Quantum Engineering, Control Systems, and Software teams to resolve technical challenges and support ongoing system improvements.

  • Oversee system installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Establish daily work priorities, assign technical responsibilities, and coordinate planned maintenance and system upgrades.
  • Provide technical guidance for diagnosing and resolving issues involving atomic physics, optical systems, control hardware, and software.
  • Monitor system performance, identify recurring issues, and drive improvements to operational reliability.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams to troubleshoot complex problems, implement technical changes, and maintain system performance.
  • Establish and maintain operating procedures, maintenance documentation, and technical records.
  • Manage onsite incident response and coordinate the team's on-call coverage for unexpected maintenance and system issues.
  • Communicate system status, operational risks, and technical priorities to the Director of Commercial Quantum Systems and relevant stakeholders.
  • Support the technical development, performance management, and training of team members.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
  • Strong technical background in experimental atomic physics, quantum computing, or similarly complex scientific systems.
  • Experience commissioning, operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting complex hardware and software systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, coordinate engineering work, and resolve complex technical problems.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions, prioritize competing operational demands, and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Willingness to work onsite at our Copenhagen office five days per week and travel occasionally to Atom Computing's facilities in Boulder, Colorado.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with neutral-atom systems, cold-atom experiments, or coherent control of quantum systems.
  • Experience operating or supporting complex scientific equipment in a production or customer-facing environment.
  • Familiarity with Python and Git.
  • Experience developing operating procedures, maintenance programs, or technical training materials.
