Senior Rust Systems Engineer – Edge Proxy & Fleet

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Rust Systems Engineer – Edge Proxy & Fleet based in India.

This is a senior systems engineering role focused on building and operating core edge infrastructure deployed across thousands of on-premise appliances in school networks. You’ll work primarily in Rust on fleet-wide over-the-air updates, control-plane connectivity with AWS, and network stack optimization. The role combines systems programming, embedded Linux, networking, containerization, and cloud infrastructure. You’ll be responsible for improving reliability, performance, and scalability across a large distributed appliance fleet. The environment offers the opportunity to work on production infrastructure where resilience and efficient resource usage are critical. You’ll collaborate with engineering teams across India, the US, and the UK while owning technically challenging systems-level initiatives.

Accountabilities:

• Own and develop core components of a fleet-wide edge proxy deployed across thousands of on-premise appliances.

• Build and maintain fleet-wide OTA update capabilities, ensuring reliable software delivery and deployment across distributed devices.

• Develop and optimize control-plane connectivity between deployed appliances and AWS-based infrastructure.

• Design and improve systems and network programming components, including TCP stream handling, socket programming, and transparent proxying.

• Tune network stack performance and system behavior to maintain reliability and efficiency at significant fleet scale.

• Work with embedded Linux environments, including device drivers, kernel modules, cross-compilation, and hardware bring-up as required.

• Build and maintain Docker/containerized workloads designed for constrained appliance environments.

• Conduct performance testing, load testing, memory and CPU profiling, and flame graph analysis to identify and resolve bottlenecks.

• Apply AWS and Infrastructure as Code concepts to support reliable cloud-connected fleet infrastructure.

• Contribute to fleet reliability, observability, operational improvements, and scalable engineering practices.

Requirements:

• 6+ years of total software engineering experience, including 3+ years of hands-on production Rust development.

• Strong production Rust experience specifically in systems or embedded environments rather than application, web, or backend development.

• Proven experience with systems and network programming, including TCP stream handling, socket programming, and transparent proxying.

• Solid embedded Linux fundamentals, with experience in areas such as device drivers, kernel modules, cross-compilation, or hardware bring-up.

• Hands-on Docker and containerization experience for constrained systems or appliance deployments.

• Experience with performance testing and profiling, including load testing, CPU and memory profiling, and flame graph analysis.

• Working knowledge of AWS and Infrastructure as Code concepts, with exposure to tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.

• Fleet management or IoT device fleet experience is strongly preferred.

• Additional experience with C/C++ or Go alongside Rust is advantageous.

• Exposure to Linux kernel networking technologies such as eBPF or netfilter, or high-performance proxy/load-balancing technologies such as HAProxy or Envoy, is a plus.

• Familiarity with RADIUS and observability practices involving tools or concepts such as CloudWatch, Splunk, and SLOs is beneficial.

• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to investigate complex systems-level issues.

• Ability to work independently on technically demanding infrastructure while collaborating effectively across distributed engineering teams.

• Experience working on production systems where reliability, performance, scalability, and resource efficiency are critical.
