Backend Django Engineer – AI & Algorithmic Systems

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Django Engineer – AI & Algorithmic Systems based in India.

This is a fully remote backend engineering role within a fast-moving, product-focused environment. You will build core backend services that support AI- and algorithm-driven products and workflows. The role combines Python and Django development with data modeling, API design, and algorithmic business logic. You will own features end-to-end, from database design through implementation, optimization, and production delivery. The position offers significant autonomy and the opportunity to influence engineering patterns, conventions, and development practices. You will collaborate with a distributed international team and turn evolving product ideas into reliable technical solutions. Accountabilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs using Python, Django, and DRF or comparable frameworks.

• Design and evolve clean relational database schemas, relationships, and domain models using PostgreSQL and SQL.

• Implement backend algorithms and business logic, including scoring, ranking, routing, decision flows, and optimization rules.

• Build production-ready services with a strong focus on correctness, maintainability, reliability, and ease of iteration.

• Optimize backend performance through efficient database queries, indexing strategies, caching, and appropriately lean API responses.

• Collaborate with product and engineering stakeholders to translate product concepts into practical technical designs, services, and endpoints.

• Contribute to backend architecture, coding conventions, reusable patterns, and development practices as the engineering organization evolves.

• Work independently within a distributed remote team while communicating technical decisions, progress, and challenges clearly.

• Apply pragmatic engineering judgment to solve problems efficiently in a rapidly evolving product environment.

Requirements

• Strong professional experience developing backend applications with Python and Django.

• Solid knowledge of relational database modeling, SQL, and PostgreSQL.

• Hands-on experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs; experience with Django REST Framework or a similar framework is advantageous.

• Experience developing non-trivial business logic or algorithmic systems, such as scoring, ranking, decision rules, routing, or optimization.

• Good understanding of backend performance, including query behavior, indexing, caching, and avoiding common database and service-level bottlenecks.

• Ability to write clean, pragmatic, production-ready code that is easy to understand, maintain, test, and evolve.

• Comfortable working independently in a remote environment with a high degree of ownership and accountability.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly when working with distributed teams and ambiguous requirements.

• A startup-oriented mindset, with the ability to move quickly, make practical decisions, and adapt solutions based on real-world feedback.

• Experience with algorithms, optimization, or data-intensive systems is a plus.

• Production experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is advantageous.

• Familiarity with Redis for caching or queues and PostgreSQL at scale is a plus.

• Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, or serverless architectures on GCP is beneficial.

• Experience gained in startups, side projects, or hackathons involving rapid delivery of practical solutions is also valued.
