About the role:

As a Database Administrator, you will play a critical role in ensuring the performance, security, availability and reliability of People First Bank's database environment. Working within System Operations team, you'll be responsible for administering and optimising enterprise databases including SQL Server, PostgresSQL and Azure SQL database supporting business critical applications and data platforms across the bank. This role partners closely with the Data & Insights team and other Technology & Transformation stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing database solutions that enable operational excellence and data-driven decision-making. You'll balance day-to-day operational support with project delivery, contributing to infrastructure modernisation, automation initiatives, and continuous improvement activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer, maintain, and optimise enterprise database platforms including SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Azure SQL Database.
  • Monitor database performance, capacity, availability, and health to ensure resilient and scalable services.
  • Design and implement database security controls, backup strategies, disaster recovery solutions, and high-availability architectures.
  • Collaborate with the Data & Insights team to support ETL processes, reporting requirements, and data optimisation initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues while working closely with application, infrastructure, vendor, and managed service provider teams.
  • Support database upgrades, lifecycle management activities, and the implementation of new technologies and enhancements.
  • Drive automation and continuous improvement initiatives to increase operational efficiency and service reliability.
  • Provide expertise in SQL development, query optimisation, indexing, schema design, and database best practices.
  • Contribute to project delivery by ensuring database solutions are secure, supportable, compliant, and performance-optimised.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures while supporting disaster recovery testing and on-call activities.

About you:

In this role, you'll be trusted to maintain high levels of database availability, integrity, and performance while proactively identifying and mitigating risks. You'll build strong partnerships across Technology & Transformation, support business-critical initiatives, and be recognised as a reliable and collaborative technical expert

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Strong experience administering and supporting SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Azure SQL Database environments.
  • Expertise in database design, performance tuning, backup and recovery, and security management.
  • Experience with high-availability architectures, replication, clustering, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Knowledge of ETL processes and Business Intelligence platforms such as Power BI, Tableau, or QlikView.
  • Experience working with cloud database platforms, including Azure and AWS RDS.
  • Strong SQL development skills, including query optimisation and stored procedures.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of security and regulatory frameworks including ISMS, Essential 8, CPS 234 and CPS 230.
