Kentro is hiring for Remote Risk Management Technical Writer to support the VA ESOM contract. Kentro is seeking a Technical Writer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs ESOM program. The writer will document disaster recovery tabletop exercises for key applications and turn technical discussions into accurate, usable reports. This role prepares exercise plans and participant materials, records decisions and observations during exercise sessions, and produces after-action reports, improvement plans, and leadership summaries. The writer works closely with engineers, analysts, application owners, and program leadership.

Location: Remote - This position can be performed remotely within the United States and will support Eastern Time working hours.

Compensation Range: The pay range for this position is $65-$75K annually. Kentro determines compensation by evaluating current government contracting and commercial market conditions, as well as the role’s specific requirements. Final salary placement within this range will be based on the candidate’s relevant skills, experience, education, certifications, location, and security clearance level, where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain exercise plans, agendas, scenarios, participant guides, facilitator guides, evaluation forms, and briefing materials.
  • Review technical source material and prepare clear descriptions of application architecture, dependencies, recovery procedures, and exercise assumptions.
  • Attend planning meetings and tabletop sessions to capture decisions, actions, strengths, weaknesses, and unresolved questions.
  • Produce after-action reports and improvement plans that connect findings to exercise objectives and supporting evidence.
  • Prepare executive summaries, status reports, presentation materials, and other program communications.
  • Edit technical contributions for clarity, accuracy, consistency, grammar, and compliance with approved templates.
  • Maintain document version control, review comments, approval records, and the exercise document repository.
  • Coordinate fact checks and content reviews with engineers, analysts, application owners, and program leaders.
  • Protect sensitive technical, security, architecture, and recovery information.
  • Maintain reusable templates, terminology, style guidance, and document production procedures.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of relevant experience
  • Experience producing technical reports, plans, procedures, meeting records, or after-action reports for complex IT programs.
  • Ability to understand technical discussions and explain them accurately to technical and leadership audiences.
  • Strong writing, editing, interviewing, research, and document management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including styles, templates, comments, and revision workflows.
  • Ability to manage multiple documents, deadlines, reviewers, and approval cycles.

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience documenting disaster recovery, business continuity, cybersecurity, or emergency management exercises.
  • Familiarity with NIST SP 800-34, NIST SP 800-84, or comparable exercise documentation practices.
  • Experience preparing after-action reports, improvement plans, standard operating procedures, or executive briefings.
  • Relevant technical communication, project management, business continuity, or exercise certification.
  • Background supporting large federal, DoD, or public-sector IT environments.

Clearance Requirement:

  • US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (Green Card)
  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain Public Trust Clearance
