Job Description

Day-to-day Linux systems administration inside NASA's enterprise IT environment. You work alongside senior administrators, database administrators, network engineers, and NASA customers, and you grow into the seat rather than arriving fully formed. This is the level where someone with solid Linux fundamentals and a real appetite for the work can step into a mission environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, physical and virtual
  • Apply patches, updates, and security hardening, including STIG compliance and vulnerability remediation
  • Monitor system health and performance; troubleshoot faults to root cause and document the resolution
  • Manage user accounts, groups, permissions, and access controls
  • Support storage and file systems — LVM, partitions, NFS, disk provisioning — and backup and recovery operations
  • Write shell scripts and use configuration management tooling to automate routine work
  • Support Linux virtual machines running on the VMware estate
  • Maintain system documentation, build records, and standard operating procedures
  • Track and resolve work through the ticketing system and support scheduled maintenance windows

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field — computer science, information systems, information technology, systems engineering, or similar
  • 2 years of professional Linux systems administration or IT infrastructure experience
  • Hands-on Linux administration — installation, configuration, patching, troubleshooting
  • Shell scripting and command-line proficiency
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals and IT security practices
  • U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
  • Residence within 50 miles of Marshall Space Flight Center

Preferred

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux specifically, or another Red Hat–family distribution
  • CompTIA Linux+, Security+, or RHCSA
  • VMware vSphere or ESXi exposure
  • STIG, SCAP, or vulnerability scanning and remediation experience
  • Ansible or similar configuration management
  • Active Public Trust, Secret, or higher
