This is an unpaid fellowship through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program. The fellow selected for this role will not receive compensation or benefits from GDIT and will not be an employee, agent or contractor of GDIT but rather will remain an employee of the DoW and will receive compensation and benefits through the DoW.

Job Description:

Through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program, GDIT offers transitioning service members the opportunity to gain hands‑on training and professional cybersecurity experience as a Cybersecurity Engineer Principal Fellow, supporting modernization, compliance, and mission assurance activities within the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Defense Stockpile Management Support (DSMS) program.

This Fellowship provides exposure to enterprise cybersecurity operations that protect critical Defense systems. Fellows gain structured learning across risk management workflows, compliance activities, inspection preparation, policy development, stakeholder communication, and cloud‑based security enhancements relevant to DSMS.

Fellow will train alongside senior cybersecurity engineers, security architects, mission support personnel, and government stakeholders to build foundational understanding of how cybersecurity ensures system integrity, mission assurance, and operational resilience within the Defense sector.

HOW A CYBERSECURITY ENGINEER PRINCIPAL FELLOW WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:

  • Assist in coordinating cybersecurity inspections, assessments, and compliance activities across DSMS environments.
  • Support development and maintenance of cybersecurity documentation, including security plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), guidance, and risk summaries.
  • Observe Risk Management Framework (RMF) workflows, security control evaluations, and Enterprise Mission Assurance Support Service (eMASS) documentation processes.
  • Learn to collect and summarize cybersecurity metrics, compliance indicators, and risk trends for stakeholder reporting.
  • Shadow senior engineers as they analyze requirements, evaluate baselines, and improve cybersecurity posture.
  • Gain exposure to modern cybersecurity platforms, including Splunk, Palo Alto, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure.
  • Provide administrative, analytical, and coordination support to cybersecurity, risk, and compliance teams.
  • Observe how cybersecurity, mission support, and technical teams collaborate across DSMS environments.
  • Learn the end‑to‑end flow of compliance activities, from requirement identification through assessment and remediation.
  • Participate in mentorship and guided development to strengthen understanding of cybersecurity engineering career pathways.
  • Participate in structured onboarding to gain familiarity with DSMS mission, environment, and cybersecurity expectations.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field

Experience

  • 8+ years of related experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cybersecurity principles, methods, and techniques
  • Familiarity with Risk Management Framework (RMF)
  • Experience with Enterprise Mission Assurance Support Service (eMASS)

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills with ability to coordinate across technical and leadership teams
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and summarize cybersecurity‑related information
  • Ability to support structured documentation and planning tasks
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a mission‑focused environment
  • Effective communication in one‑on‑one, team, and senior‑level settings
  • Interest in modern cybersecurity technologies (Splunk, Palo Alto, AWS, Azure)
  • IAM Level III Certification (CISSP, CISM or GSLC)

Role Requirements:

  • Active TS/SCI security clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • On‑site attendance at customer site in Fort Belvoir, VA
  • Fellowship duration aligned with DoW SkillBridge requirements.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

DoW SkillBridge Eligibility:

  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty
  • Can participate within the last 6 months of separation or retirement
  • Will receive an honorable discharge
  • Has taken any service TAP/TGPS
  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months

Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoW SkillBridge Program prior to start of the fellowship.
