We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Associate Director, Software Engineering
In this role, you will (what you’ll do)
- Lead the hands-on design and development of a developer tooling solution to modernise legacy applications using Moderne and OpenRewrite, taking features from concept through to production.
- Build, test and maintain custom OpenRewrite recipes (Java) to automate refactoring and accelerate modernisation across multiple codebases.
- Design and develop dashboards, reports and user-facing capabilities around the vendor solution to drive adoption, transparency and measurable outcomes.
- Collaborate with the vendor and internal engineering teams to shape solution design, define standards and enable consistent onboarding and usage across development teams.
- Provide technical leadership through design reviews, code reviews and mentoring, setting engineering standards and improving overall code quality and delivery practices.
- Assess solution options and trade-offs (benefits, risks, dependencies), document architectural decisions, and proactively navigate the organisation to drive implementation.
- Support the platform in production by diagnosing issues, partnering with the central SRE team for operational management, and continuously improving reliability and user experience.
To be successful, you will (knowledge, experience and qualifications)
- Have a degree in Computer Science / Information Technology or related discipline with minimal experience from 10 to 14 years
- Have strong Full Stack engineering skills and experience with modern frameworks (like Spring Boot, Vert.x or Helidon for Java and Angular or Node.js for UI and build plugins/tools development using Maven or Gradle), with a focus on writing maintainable, well-tested code.
- Have hands-on experience with OpenRewrite and/or large-scale codebase modernisation, including designing and authoring custom recipes (Moderne Open-Rewrite experience is desirable).
- Be comfortable working with data stores and analytics-style use cases, including relational and/or NoSQL databases (for example PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or equivalent)
- Have experience with database design and management, including SQL and NoSQL databases like PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or similar to support analytics style use cases like reports and insights.
- Demonstrate strong engineering fundamentals: analytical problem-solving, structured troubleshooting, and applying SOLID and other architectural principles in design, code and tests.
- Be confident working as a technical lead, influencing design direction, guiding other engineers and driving alignment across teams.
- Communicate clearly in spoken and written English, work effectively with minimal supervision, and collaborate well across vendor teams, internal engineering teams and central SRE support.
- Experience in DevOps tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana. Experience in scripting languages like Bash / Shell scripting, Python, Groovy etc.
