Full description

Brook Green Supply (BGS) is a leading independent B2B energy supplier, delivering tailored energy supply and Net-Zero solutions to industrial and commercial consumers. We are looking for a Senior Business Analyst to join the Trading and Commercial pod. The pod owns the systems behind the commercial lifecycle, including sales, products and pricing, renewals, customer trading through the sales trading desk, and the trade desk’s buy-side trading and portfolio management across commodities, renewable certificates, and power and gas purchase agreements.

Reporting to the Product Manager for Trading and Commercial, you will own the definition, detail and delivery of product changes from early discovery through to production adoption. Your users are internal: the trade desk, commercial and sales teams, and operations.

This role suits an experienced Business Analyst who works well in agile product teams, challenges low-value requests with evidence, and translates clearly between commercial and technical stakeholders. You will help improve a live platform that continues to evolve quickly, while supporting new capability for the business.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Take features from early idea through to production, working with the Product Manager, Product Owner, UX designers, developers and QA.
  • Run lightweight discovery, including stakeholder interviews, data analysis, competitor scans and early prototype testing, so build decisions are evidence based.
  • Understand current platform behaviour, identify the real business problem and define practical solutions before writing user stories.
  • Own the health of the backlog, prioritising with the Product Manager based on evidenced business value rather than accumulated requests.
  • Facilitate refinement and break epics into clear, deliverable stories that developers can pick up and complete.
  • Surface dependencies, technical risk, commercial impact and scope creep early so the team can act before delivery is affected.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to internal users, challenging low-value requests constructively and translating between commercial and technical conversations.
  • Run impact analysis across technical, commercial and customer dimensions, ensuring ambiguity is resolved through collaboration rather than rework.
  • Write and maintain acceptance criteria, business rules, story maps and process flows that are precise enough to build from and useful after handover.
  • Own outcomes rather than tickets, making sure the business understands what is shipping, why it matters and how it changes ways of working.
  • Set the standard for requirements and specification quality within the team, and act as the voice of the product when the Product Manager is unavailable.
  • Help shape how the Business Analyst and Product Owner function develops as the team and platform grow.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • At least five years’ experience as a Business Analyst, including hands-on experience in an agile product team using Scrum, Kanban or similar ways of working.
  • Experience in a startup, scale-up or fast-changing environment, with the confidence to work through ambiguity and limited resource.
  • Strong product discovery skills, with the ability to balance user experience, technical feasibility, commercial viability and data implications.
  • Confident writing story maps, process flows, acceptance criteria, business rules and impact assessments.
  • Strong risk and impact analysis skills, with the ability to identify dependencies and delivery blockers early.
  • Fluent in Jira and Confluence, or close equivalents.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence internal users, developers, QA and product colleagues.
  • Clear communicator who explains complex requirements and product decisions to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A background in software development or QA is desirable.
  • Energy market knowledge is desirable but not essential. The ability to learn quickly and adapt to the UK power and gas domain is more important.

The Shape of the Job:

  • You'll be handed features while they're still an idea, for example "hedge traders need better visibility of their within-month portfolio position", and you'll take it from there to production alongside the Product Manager, Product Owner and UX designer: talk to the desk, work out whether it's worth building, establish how the platform behaves today, write the stories, then stay with it until it's live and embedded in how people actually work.
  • The work splits between improving a platform that has been live for around eighteen months and is still changing quickly and building new capability for the business. Both need someone who can find the real problem before writing a single story.
