As we continue to expand our digital and data capabilities, we are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our team in Sligo and play a key role in advancing our Data, AI & Analytics strategy.
Purpose of the Role
The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and enabling scalable data products, platforms, and capabilities that deliver measurable business value across Abbott Diabetes Care.
Operating at the intersection of data, technology, and business, this role transforms complex data into trusted, accessible, and reusable assets that power analytics, reporting, automation, artificial intelligence, and operational decision-making. Working closely with business stakeholders, Data Product Leads, architects, data scientists, and IT partners, you will ensure data solutions align with strategic priorities while meeting enterprise standards for quality, governance, security, and scalability.
This is a unique opportunity to shape and build foundational data capabilities from the ground up. The successful candidate will establish and embed standard work, create and maintain SOPs, and develop scalable end-to-end processes that support consistent, high-quality data management across the organisation. Through these efforts, you will play a key role in enabling Abbott's Data, AI & Analytics strategy, driving the adoption of advanced analytics, AI, self-service reporting, and business intelligence solutions.

Key Responsibilities
Data Engineering Strategy & Delivery
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable data products, pipelines, and platforms that support business, analytics, and AI use cases.
- Translate business and data product requirements into robust technical solutions that create measurable business value.
- Develop reusable and scalable data assets that improve accessibility, consistency, and efficiency across the enterprise.
- Ensure data platforms and solutions can support increasing volumes, complexity, and future AI requirements.
- Contribute to the evolution of Abbott's modern data architecture and enterprise data ecosystem.
Data Quality, Governance & Reliability
- Implement data quality controls, monitoring, and validation processes to ensure trusted and reliable data products.
- Partner with Data Product Leads and Data Governance teams to establish data ownership, stewardship, and accountability practices.
- Ensure compliance with data governance, security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
- Support the implementation of enterprise Data Quality Frameworks and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop solutions that improve data consistency, availability, integrity, and traceability.
AI, Analytics & Digital Enablement
- Build data foundations that support advanced analytics, machine learning, AI, automation, and self-service reporting solutions.
- Collaborate with Data Scientists to enable scalable deployment and operationalisation of analytical models and AI solutions.
- Support the development of trusted datasets that accelerate insight generation and decision-making.
- Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, and modernise data processes and capabilities.
- Promote adoption of modern data engineering practices that improve organisational agility and innovation.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Leadership
- Partner with business stakeholders to understand challenges, priorities, and data requirements.
- Collaborate closely with Data Product Leads, Data Scientists, Architects, and IT partners to deliver integrated solutions.
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical audiences.
- Influence technical direction and promote engineering best practices across the organisation.
- Mentor and support junior engineers while fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Stay informed on emerging technologies, modern data architectures, cloud platforms, and AI-enabled capabilities.
- Evaluate and recommend innovative approaches that improve business outcomes and operational efficiency.
- Contribute to building a data-driven culture through knowledge sharing and technical leadership.
- Support initiatives that improve organisational data literacy and confidence in enterprise data assets.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related discipline.
- Significant experience designing and delivering enterprise-scale data engineering solutions.
- Strong experience with AWS Cloud technologies, Databricks, Oracle databases, Python, Spark, and SQL.
- Experience implementing Data Governance and Data Quality practices.
- Experience supporting AI, machine learning, analytics, and reporting solutions.
- Strong understanding of modern data architectures, data modelling, metadata, lineage, and data management principles.
- Experience working in highly regulated environments requiring compliance with data integrity, quality, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
Essential
- Experience within Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Biotechnology, or Healthcare industries.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience delivering data engineering solutions that enable business value, analytics, automation, and AI outcomes.
- Experience working within cross-functional teams across business and technology environments.
- Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions.
- Intellectual curiosity, innovation mindset, and passion for continuous improvement.
- Proven experience operating within highly regulated Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Biotechnology, or Healthcare environments. Strong understanding of GxP requirements, Computer System Validation (CSV), FDA 21 CFR Part 11, EU Annex 11, Data Integrity principles (ALCOA+), Quality Management Systems, and regulatory expectations governing the development, management, and use of data, analytics, and AI solutions.
Preferred
- Experience within healthcare, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or other regulated industries.
- Experience with cloud platforms and modern data architectures.
- Familiarity with AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics environments.
- Experience leading technical projects or mentoring team members.
